Review
"This may well be the best multiage read aloud narrative of world history yet to have been written. " -- Homeschooling in Japan, January 2002

This is a basic history resource from which you can build a complete study for the early grades. -- Cathy Duffy, author of Christian Home Educator's Manual: Elementary Grades and co-author of Beyond Survival: A Guide to Abundant-Life Homeschooling

This works wonderfully as a family read-aloud... There's plenty of dialogue and enough detail to keep adults interested. -- Cafi Cohen, author of Homeschooling The Teen Years

Fantastic History Text Told As A Story
By N. Woods
As a HomeSchooling mom to two children, ages 7 and 5, I am always looking for ways to get them interested in the material we are studying. This book series came highly recommended by other HS parents, and so far I have been extremely pleased. When I was in school, History was one of my least favorite subjects because the material was dry and difficult for me to relate to. I WISH that when I was in school I had access to this book because it reads like a story, which makes it much more interesting and easier to comprehend! The only improvement that I could recommend would be to add more questions at the end of each section, and perhaps even online material and videos to encourage further learning. I noticed that there is a correlating workbook, but I would prefer if they came together as a set. It would be easier if the material were provided without having to purchase additional books and materials.

Great book for beginning history with your kids
By Jennifer Fowler
We first checked this book out from our public library but were disappointed to have to return it! We were SO excited to find it- along with three other volumes- for sale on the internet! Our 8 year old daughter is dyslexic and we needed something that we could read aloud to here that would engage her. This is her first taste of history and it is now her FAVORITE subject. The text draws her in by making her an active part of the narrative by asking her thoughtful questions and getting her to participate. She now requests this book for her "reading aloud time" and can't seem to get enough. We are looking forward to getting to the Medieval volume very much (my husband and I are HUGE fans of that period!). It really is very entertaining for the student and the teacher! The only real drawback that I have is that it treats Christianity as matter-of-fact and most of the other beliefs as "legend and lore"...religious beliefs are a part of history and they shape cultures however the narrative is very confusing and awkward and doesn't draw any lines between the "real history" and the legends that were handed down. On the whole though, it is an introduction for a young child and since it is meant to be read aloud, the parent is there to help steer the child in the way of the family's own personal belief structure. We are a Christian family, but I am sensitive to the fact that this book's views on the matter could turn away a lot of people, assuming that the supernatural parts of the Bible really did happen, as they are written, as true history. My high rating is due mostly to the appeal it has to our daughter...getting her to pay attention to anything to do with "learning" is a task! It is truly an engaging book for young children. We are looking forward to the next three books!

Good reader
By Lakota J. Myers
I like the reader for these stories. She could put a little more genuine emotion into it, though. She speaks with emotion, but it is the same cadence and emotion for each story, mostly. Using the audio makes it easier for us to get our homeschool history lessons in when we need to be away from home, or with kids who are reluctant to listen to Mom read aloud.
The intro and "outro" music is a little loud and annoying, however. Not having heard the Jim Weiss versions, I wonder if they ever changed that? At any rate, I often find myself trying to catch it before the intro to the next chapter and turning it down or off, to save my ears.

Still a good and useful product which I would recommend.
