Johann Sebastian BACH 1685–1750

Through the autumn countryside of Germany, a young man of twenty walks briskly, soaking up the faded October sun and crunching fallen leaves underfoot. It is 1705, and the young man is on his way from Arnstadt to Lubeck—a two-hundred mile trek. The miles pass quickly as he anticipates the music he is determined to hear. One of the great organists of his day, Dietrich Buxtehude, will be performing evening musical devotions at the Cathedral this time of year, in preparation for Advent.

Traveling on foot to hear concerts was nothing new to this young organist; many times he had tramped thirty miles to Hamburg to hear the renowned organist Reincken and had even walked sixty miles to Celle to attend programs of French music. But to hear Buxtehude! For this opportunity, he needed at least a month’s leave of absence from his position as a church organist. His superiors had grudgingly consented after the organist entreated them relentlessly for the necessary leave.

Arriving at Lubeck, footsore yet charged with excitement, the young musician drinks in the organ concerts of the master with a profound sense of personal inspiration. He sends word back to his employer at Arnstadt that he needs two months off instead of just one, knowing he risks being fired.

Three years after this experience, he announces his ultimate purpose in life: to create "well-regulated church music to the glory of God." With an insatiable appetite to learn and a propensity for ceaseless work, he set about doing just that. His name was Johann Sebastian Bach. Throughout history, Bach has been acclaimed as the Christian composer, almost a kind of "patron saint" for church musicians. All around the world, he is recognized as one of the greatest composers in history. This is not to say there were no great spiritual composers before Bach; he actually represents the culmination of centuries of Christian music.

The sheer number of works he composed is staggering, however, and so is their diversity. They include chorales, cantatas, masses, oratorios, passions, concerti, and solo works for virtually every instrument of his day. Bach was prolific in other areas of life as well: He worked in a variety of demanding jobs (often with many extra-musical duties), and fathered twenty children, several of whom also matured into noted musicians.

When Johann Sebastian was born in 1685 in Eisenach, Germany, the Bach name was already synonymous with the musical trade. More than fifty musicians bearing that name are remembered by musicologists today. Even as a boy, Bach appeared eager to find expression for his emerging musical talent.

Orphaned at the age of nine, Johann moved in with an older brother, and his musical training began. He soon developed into an outstanding singer and demonstrated a remarkable ability to play the organ, the violin, and numerous other instruments. Bach’s brother owned a set of compositions, which he forbade the younger Bach to use. Perhaps because it was placed off-limits, that musical manuscript grew irresistibly attractive to the young musician.

And so for weeks, Bach stole the precious pages and hid them in his room, where he stayed up late night after night copying the musical scores by moonlight. When his brother discovered the copied pages, he angrily confiscated them. But Bach had already gleaned valuable lessons in composition, as well as discipline and devotion to music, from the clandestine exercise.

Throughout his life he was known much more as an organist than as a composer. Amazing to us, only ten of Bach’s original compositions were published during his lifetime. It was not until the nineteenth century that his brilliance as a composer was truly appreciated. Only then would he be revered by such masters as Beethoven, who claimed, "His name ought not to be Bach [Bach is the German word for brook], but ocean, because of his infinite and inexhaustible wealth of combinations and harmonies."

Like so many other masters throughout history, Bach’s personality had many facets. On one hand, he was free from personal vanity and generous and encouraging toward his many pupils. The Bach family also had a great reputation for their hospitality. His first biographer, Forkel, notes, "These sociable virtues, together with his great artistic fame, caused his house to be rarely free from visitors."

Once, when an acquaintance praised Bach’s wonderful skill as an organist, he replied with characteristic humility and wit, "There is nothing very wonderful about it. You have only to hit the right notes at the right moment and the instrument does the rest."

Yet he could be stubborn and irritable, especially with an unappreciative employer or an incompetent musician. At the age of twenty, Bach ridiculed a colleague by calling him "Kippelfagottist"—a "nanny-goat bassoonist." The offended musician picked up a stick and struck Bach, who drew his sword. A full-blown duel would have ensued, but fortunately, friends who saw the argument intensify threw themselves between the two adversaries to keep them apart.

Bach spent his entire life in Germany, working primarily as a church musician. For the two centuries prior, this region had been permeated by the legacy of Martin Luther, with his radical emphasis on a living, personal, Bible-based Christianity. Luther himself had been a musician, declaring music to be second only to the Gospel itself. Bach was to be the reformer’s greatest musical disciple.

Bach resoundingly echoed the convictions of Luther, claiming that "Music’s only purpose should be for the glory of God and the recreation of the human spirit." As he set about composing, he would frequently initial his blank manuscript pages with the marking, "J. J." (Jesu Juva—"Help me, Jesus"), or "I. N. J." (In Nomine Jesu—"In the name of Jesus"). At the manuscript’s end, Bach routinely initialed the letters "S. D. G." (Soli Deo Gloria—"To God alone, the glory"). To Bach, these were not trite religious slogans but sincere expressions of personal devotion.

A great book!
By Brandon Matuja
I believe that this book is an important read, because I think it's definitely in the interests of too many classical-music reviewers to more or less downplay or disregard the personal faith of so many of the classical masters. Although this book isn't exhaustive either in its information or its selection of composers documented -- which the author himself acknowledges -- and would've been better if it were longer, perhaps, yet it is still a highly recommended read.

The information is well-documented and referenced; and it was a joy, a delight, and confirmation to me, as a Christian, to read about the personal, well-documented expressions of faith from some of classical music's most talented artists, including Bach, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, and others less popular.

Thanks Mr. Kavanaugh, for the research and writing -- and why don't you release more of your own music for us classical-music fans to check out? :-)

WHAT THE SPIRITUAL LIVES OF THE GREAT COMPOSERS MEANT TO ME.
By Elayne Morgan
This is a wonderful look into composer's such as Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and many others about their spiritual lives. The book is well written and great research has been done on each composer. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes music, especially the classical composers. What I liked about this book was how personal the stories were about each composer. I felt like I knew them well after reading this book.

The Puritans of Plymouth Plantation: A Personalized History by William Bradford
By Ernesto L. Gonzalez
5.0 out of 5 stars Pilgrims: The Puritan Experience in Plymouth Massachusetts, July 25, 2015

Verified Purchase (What's this?)
This review is from: History Of Plymouth Plantation (Paperback)
I found the book referenced above, after reading the long out-of-print: The Bradford History: Bradford's History "Of Plimoth Plantation" "From The Original Manuscript With A Report Of The Proceedings Incident To The Return Of The Manuscript To Massachusetts. Printed Under The Direction Of The Secretary Of The Commonwealth Of The General Court." Boston: Wright & Potter Printing Co., State Printers, 18 Post Office Square (1899).
In the introduction, the author mentions how Charles Deane 1813-1899, originally presented the "History Of Plymouth Plantation in 1856: "The matter has been in print since 1856, put forth through the public spirit of the Massachusetts Historical Society, which secured a transcript of the document from London, and printed it in the society's Collections of the above-named year. As thus presented, it had copious notes, prepared with great care by the late Charles Dean" (1813-1889): ED. CN. "But these (copious notes) are not given in the present volume..." The aforementioned book from 1899 did indeed lack the "copious notes" making me curious as to what they were and how much more scholarly information it added from the 1899 transcription "which proof was carefully compared, word for word, with a photographic facsimile issued in 1896 in both London and Boston (ix)." The 1899 version (with Index included) was 555 pages long; the one reprinted above is over 1647 (not including Indexes and Appendixes) pages and much more scholarly for the serious teacher or researcher. I highly recommend it--even in this reprinted form; my only complaint is that this largely-expanded and scanned Deane edition should have had the original cover as well as being re-published in Hardback edition including original artwork;but I suppose that this might have been omitted due to costs; furthermore, I think the scanning process was done a bit sloppy (although I believe this may have been done for the sake of "authenticity)," but the elongated black scan marks along every page as well as other "scanning" defects I believe could have been avoided--along with the original cover instead of the non-original (but attractive) present cover. If films can be painstakingly restored to almost "better than the original" if re-mastered properly, I suppose this could easily be done in print--especially with today's technology--but instead of losing important, historical books which have been long out-of-print, these "print on demand" books appear to be the "wave of the future." The 1899 version I own (though abridged) appears original--unlike the book sold here and for such a steep price found here, more care should have been given to its reproduction. Other than those perfectionist complaints, the book is highly recommended--primarily for its superb historical research and sources available during Deane's lifetime which are nearly impossible to find today even if one is fortunate enough to locate copies of them. If money is a problem, you can still buy it by carefully searching Amazon's "third party" sellers of good repute. But even at full price, it is still a worthwhile expense The material found within the book is certainly mandatory for all who love to deeply delve into History. Incidentally, the language and archaic punctuation was kept intact ( English punctuation was not yet made standard in the 17th century). For further reference on Orthography and its evolution refer to Samuel Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language (1755). It may be a good idea to review Middle English/Early Modern English (17th Century), before or as you read the material. Because of its nature, the book will certainly not be a "quick read" by any means--but a pillar of study from an era long bygone.

Excellent introductory textbook!
By B. F. Mooney
After nearly a year of using this book with hundreds of college students, I can easily attest to the excellence of this textbook. It offers many outstanding, modern pedagogic features such as frequent summaries of the "take-home lesson", truly useful and not merely decorative graphics (of the high quality one can expect from Freeman), and other features already mentioned in the reviews Amazon has included at the beginning of this page. Supporting materials such as the student study guide are very good, and the instructor's manual is massive. The Power Points give lecturers classroom access to the first-rate graphics.

The writing is of a quality which is above the average one sees today in even good textbooks. The author has chosen interesting and fairly sophisticated material to give students a chance to see why biologists find life fascinating. two example: physiological adaptations to high altitude, and thermoregulation.

This is an especially good choice for a one-semester life science courses for non-majors. You also have your choice of editions with or without physiology. If you are using this book as a student, consider buying the study guide, and be sure to do all of the text exercises.

I'm a philosophy major who had to take a life science class to graduate. This was the assigned textbook and it's great. Fun to read and very informative. There's a big difference between the editions though so make sure to get the one that was assigned ---I made that mistake. This book is obviously a passion project of the professor and the updates aren't cosmetic (read to make money) but quite substantial. In fact if you're interested in biology you could read this textbook for fun. Also he wrote Mean Genes and that's quite good as well, but more of an armchair read. The professor teaches at UCLA and his lectures are available online.

very good book on biology. It is really identical to all of the other 'What is life?" books that share the same cover. Instructor's edition has no real significant changes from the student edition and can be used in any biology class that requires this book. highly recommend it :-)

Secrets of Antigravity Propulsion: Tesla, UFOs, and Classified Aerospace Technology, by Paul A. LaViolette Ph.D.

A complete investigation of the development and suppression of antigravity and field propulsion technologies

• Reveals advanced aerospace technologies capable of controlling gravity that could revolutionize air travel and energy production

• Reviews numerous field propulsion devices that have thrust-to-power ratios thousands of times greater than a jet engine

• Shows how NASA participates in a cover-up to block adoption of advanced technologies under military development

In Secrets of Antigravity Propulsion, physicist Paul LaViolette reveals the secret history of antigravity experimentation--from Nikola Tesla and T. Townsend Brown to the B-2 Advanced Technology Bomber. He discloses the existence of advanced gravity-control technologies, under secret military development for decades, that could revolutionize air travel and energy production. Included among the secret projects he reveals is the research of Project Skyvault to develop an aerospace propulsion system using intense beams of microwave energy similar to that used by the strange crafts seen flying over Area 51.

Using subquantum kinetics--the science behind antigravity technology--LaViolette reviews numerous field-propulsion devices and technologies that have thrust-to-power ratios thousands of times greater than that of a jet engine and whose effects are not explained by conventional physics and relativity theory. He then presents controversial evidence about the NASA cover-up in adopting these advanced technologies. He also details ongoing Russian research to duplicate John Searl’s self-propelled levitating disc and shows how the results of the Podkletnov gravity beam experiment could be harnessed to produce an interstellar spacecraft.

Review
“Kudos to Paul LaViolette for disclosing the important new science of electro-magneto-gravitic propulsion. For over fifty years, humanity has continued to use earth-destroying primitive fuels when an ocean of infinite energy teems all around us. It is time that the truth be known!” (Steven M. Greer, M.D., author of Hidden Truth: Forbidden Knowledge)

“Paul LaViolette is one of the most interesting and innovative thinkers probing the limits and horizons of contemporary physics. In this book he takes up a challenge that many of us have thought about but could not document: the possibility of propulsion systems that practically defy gravity. His findings merit earnest consideration, debate, and discussion.” (Ervin Laszlo, author of Science and the Akashic Field)

“Paul LaViolette’s investigations into this most mysterious of subjects are at once fascinating and prescient.” (Nick Cook, author of The Hunt for Zero Point: Inside the Classified World of Antigravity Technology)

“One of the boldest and most exciting books on gravity control to be put forward in our times. Paul LaViolette is an outstanding scientist and the first to reverse engineer the B-2’s highly classified propulsion system.” (Eugene Podkletnov, Ph.D., Professor of Chemistry, Tampere, Finland)

“Paul LaViolette has once again unearthed advanced knowledge that can change our lives. This is a landmark book to be read and discussed by anyone concerned about humanity’s options for the near future.” (Jeane Manning, author of The Coming Energy Revolution: The Search for Free Energy)

"If you buy only one book on antigravity/electrogravity, this had better be the one! I have been a fan of Townsend Brown since the early eighties. This book showed me things I DID NOT know! . . . Secrets ARE revealed." (T. Long, reviewer, July 2008)

"Numerous field-propulsion devices and techologies that have huge thrust-to-power ratios are surveyed in chapters which offer new science ideas and theories perfect for any new age library." (The Midwest Book Review, Sept 2008)

Where's My Aircar?
By David B. Mignery
In the 1950s when I was an avid reader of science fiction, I assumed that by now we would all be flitting through the air in levitating antigravity aircars like those in "The Jetsons" and the Starwars films. What happened? Paul LaViolette tells us what happened. The technology that would make it all possible has been swept up by the military-industrial complex and locked away in a vault of intense secrecy.

A physicist by the name of Thomas Townsend Brown, began research on electrogravitics during the 1920s. His revolutionary work on gravity control made him an important man in the scientific world. He took out patents and developed numerous working models of antigravity machines which strongly resembled our popular images of flying saucers.

During World War 2 he was inducted into the US Navy to continue his research for military purposes. It appears likely that he was involved in the notorious Philadelphia Experiment as a result of which he was forced to resign. Complete records of his military service and the circumstances of his discharge are missing.

He continued his research efforts for various corporations and laboratories until his death in 1985 but he had apparently lost the military's full confidence and he received little if any government financing. Meanwhile, the military continued with their own gravity control projects as did many of the country's largest defense contractors. Although the details of their research were kept secret, they made no secret of the fact that such research was being conducted and that it would have a tremendous impact. That was true until the 1960s when the military clamped down the lid of total secrecy, apparently, because there had been a major breakthrough. All public discussion of such research came to an abrupt halt and electrogravitics was moved into the realm of "black technology".

The practical application of gravity control seems to based on the physics of subquantum kinetics as apposed to the "classical" but incompatible physics of general relativity and quantum mechanics. According to LaViollette, the theory of subquantum kinetics successfully overcomes many of the problems associated with "classical" theories. I am absolutely not qualified to have an opinion about this nor on the extensive mathematics that he offers by way of explanation. Judging by what's available on the internet, LaViolette has the field of subquantum kinetics pretty much to himself, which makes him a lone genius or a foolish crank. On the other hand, there don't seem to be many physicists out there who have bothered to refute LaViollette's theories. All I know is, this book doesn't read like the work of a fool or a crank.

Subquantum kinetics theory permits velocities at many multiples of the speed of light, something considered impossible under the theory of relativity. LaViolette explains how a superluminal spaceship might be powered using electrogravitic technology. It has been used by scientists and engineers (blessed with virtually unlimited funding and unhindered by concerns of conformity and "respectability" that permeate academic science) working on "black projects" since at least the 1950s.

According to LaViolette, the USAF's B-2 bomber seems to incorporate electrogravitic principles in its design and construction which give it performance capabilities, such as the ability to hover silently, that are never seen publicly. It would appear that most, if not all, unexplained UFO incidents involve terrestrial military research aircraft. Since military electrogravitic technology (assuming it exists) is shrouded in secrecy, there is no way of knowing one way or the other, but he makes a convincing case.

Nick Cook's "The Hunt for Zero Point" is a good book to read in conjunction with LaViollette's work. It is much less technical and mostly concerns his investigation into the world of black technology.

Given the current state of humanity, perhaps it's a good thing we don't all have aircars. Think of the problems. Humans would be free to do anywhere, spewing their pollution, garbage, destruction, and bombs at will. There would be no defense. Fences would be useless. The entire planet would soon look like a landfill or worse. I, for one, am willing to wait for intelligent life to appear on Earth before turning electrogravitics loose.

If it turns out that this book is generally correct then it will deserve 5 stars.

After years of working at DOE and reading all kinds of research on different aspects of physics, I have to compliment Paul LaViolette on an astounding book. Sometimes, you have to jump off the deep end and dive down into concepts that feel threatening and challenge everything you know. I am not done with this book...it will continue to make me think, dream, and theorize about these ideas for the rest of my life. NOBODY should take this material for granted. It will challenge you, excite you, make you want to cry, and ultimately, drive you to experiment on your own. I don't have to worry about the challenge I'm including in this review because if you've read this far, you have the stamina to go further. Take it on!

The Nuts & Bolts of the Gravity Mechanism
By B. Hauser
This has truly got to be the gold standard whereby all literature on the nonconventional or unorthodox views on gravity is gauged. I found that it is not only well and quite soberly written and gives every appearance of being thoroughly researched, but is easily comprehensible to anyone who has had at least second year college physics and the associated calculus and even at that there is actually very minimal advanced mathematics which, for those not familiar with vector calculus notation, can be skipped with little or no loss in continuity of discussion.

The main thesis here is that, as initially difficult to accept as it might seem, gravity and electrostatic force are in fact directly related to the extent that both electrostatic and gravitational force are gradient scalar field potentials
and more significantly that gravitational force between two masses can be either mutually repulsive or attractive in effect.....specifically, a positively charged proton produces a "well" in gravitational potential while the corresponding negatively charged electron allegedly creates a gravitational "hill" but much smaller because the electron has approximately 1 / 1840th of the inertial mass of the proton thusly accounting for the net effect of "attraction" between two electrically neutral physical masses. Certainly an intriguing concept even if as yet remaining to be proven "beyond any reasonable doubt and to a moral certainty" until an even more comprehensive theory should emerge.

Author Paul LaViolette also explores much of the personal history of Thomas Townsend Brown and his experimentation with the "electrokinetic thrust" device, the patent for which I have personally seen at the U.S. Patent Office in Sacramento and a full copy of which I have in my files from the Sunnyvale Patent Office Library. There is flatly no question whatsoever that the patent has very much always existed since originally issued...the question is whether the design actually does work as proposed and if so, what is the exact theory of operation and does it truly prove that the largely plagiarized so-called "Einstein" Theory of Gravitation (General Relativity) is either in grave error or must be radically modified or revised. The works of Charles Fort were not for those intimidated by the idea of thinking outside the box of conventional science and neither is this particular treatise...but for anyone considering himself to be of true intellectual courage and willing to impartially examine and ponder, even while not blindly accepting, a few offbeat concepts of gravity and a host of other fascinating material on antigrav and alternative propulsion that have been set forth throughout the last century, this is a must read.

As a final note, it was cited briefly in Max Born's benchmark compilation of atomic research in the first half of the 20th century, ATOMIK PHYSIK, that the brilliant German physicist, Artur Sommerfeld, had conceived of a "Quantum Theory of Gravitation" (1942), but the text did not go into any detail whatsoever other than mere mention of its existence.
