About the Author
Lorin Wood was raised in an extraordinarily creative home with family members who encouraged him to pursue the visual arts from his earliest years. His love of illustration and design was refined by copying his father's industrial design portfolio and getting a healthy dose of the work of Syd Mead, Joe Johnston, and Ralph McQuarrie, among others. Wood s passion for spaceships and robots led to a career as a conceptual designer that has spanned nearly two decades, working across multiple facets within the entertainment industry from animation, visual effects, and previsualization, to product and installation design. Some of his film credits include 2008 s The Day the Earth Stood Still for 20th Century Fox under legendary visual effects supervisor Jeffrey Okun, 2006 s A Scanner Darkly by Richard Linklater for Warner Independent Pictures, and Unique, a film pitch with David Goyer at the Walt Disney Company. He also contributed to the video game Aliens: Colonial Marines for Sega and the popular Borderlands franchise at Gearbox Software, where he created the game s muse robot, Claptrap. More Fantastic Mech Artwork

I have been waiting for the third book in this series and the wait was well worthwhile. Just as good as the first two but even more pages! The variety of artistic style is another plus. This is simply a great art book filled with nuthin' but mech. I love it and hope there will be more. I just can't stop admiring the creativity.

Brilliant, Faithful, Existentially Satisfying

To avoid prepping for the General Ordination Exams (that I take in two days!), I've been commenting on various year-end lists. On one "Top Theology Books of 2012," I suggested that the author check out Fleming Rutledge's collection of Old Testament sermons. It's brilliant and accessible; existentially satisfying and faithful to the biblical texts. When I simply can't bring myself to pick up the Bible, or find my own ears and eyes completely deaf and blind to it, her clear yet round-about proclamation always seems to penetrate my numbness: unclogging my ears and unscaling my eyes. Rutledge's corpus has served as a daily devotional for most of this year.

Great Devotional-Quality Book of Sermons

When did you last hear a series of sermons that deeply engage the Christian Old Testament? Rev. Fleming Rutledge provides in "And God Spoke to Abraham" a rich resource for Christians looking for serious engagement with Old Testament texts.

Rutledge is an evangelical Anglican who has served numerous churches and traveled widely as a guest speaker. Reading a sermon is never the same as hearing a sermon but they still provide a window into one congregation's engagement with the Bible. The sermons are short enough that I could read one as my daily devotional. Recommended!

In my opinion Fleming Rutledge is the best expository preacher in the US. This collection of sermons on texts from the Old Testament is an outstanding resource for preachers who seek to address the full canon of scripture, "the whole counsel of God" and for laity who wish to wrestle with the God who speaks and acts in history. Highly recommended!

For many classical decision problems (testing and estimation problems, prediction, construction of confidence regions) bootstrap has been compared with classical approximations based on mathematical limit theorems and expansions (for instance normal approximations, empirical Edgeworth expansions) (see for instance Bretagnolle (1983) and Beran (1982, 1984a, 1987, 1988), Abramovitch and Singh (1985), and Hall (1986a, 1988) ). An asymptotic treatment of bootstrap is contained in the book Beran and Ducharme (1991). A detailed analysis of bootstrap based on higher order Edgeworth expansions has been carried out in the book Hall (1992). Recent publications on bootstrap can also be found in the conference volumes LePage and Billard (1992) and Joeckel, Rothe, and Sendler (1992). We will consider the application of bootstrap in three contexts: estimation of smooth functionals, nonparametric curve estimation, and linear models. We do not attempt a complete description of bootstrap in these areas.

Very helpful and enriching ideas

While not meant to be an actual curriculum in itself, the First Grade Diary is a very helpful tool to use along with the Miquon Math Lab Materials: Orange Book Level 1 and the Lab Sheet Annotations and Mathematics for the Primary Teacher (Miquon Math Lab Series:) and of course, CUISENAIRE RODS SMALL GROUP 155/PK. I don't use the First Grade Diary every time but it is a great way to expand and enrich the program and understand the larger Miquon math philosophy...which has been helpful to me, as I am a certified mathophobe.

About the Author
Alona Pulde, MD, and Matthew Lederman, MD, both specialize in nutritional and lifestyle medicine. Together they have created the lifestyle-improvement program used in their medical center and for patients in the film Forks Over Knives. I was honestly a little disappointed in this book

I was honestly a little disappointed in this book. Maybe my expectations were too high but I didn't find it as useful as I had hoped. I found the information for families that it did have was insightful but I really feel there could have been much more. Also, I was wasn't impressed with the recipe section. Most of them were more complicated than I had hoped. The fact that most of the recipes did not have pictures was a real let down. Overall I wouldn't buy again. I think the aim is more for families who want to make the occasional plant based dish or families who are brand new to the concept of a plant based diet. Wish I could return it.

Down To Earth

The author and chef did get a lot of things right with this book: the difficulty of transitioning a family into a vegan diet, defending the switch to others, supplements that may be needed, ease of preparation, etc. The language is clear and the presentation brief but informative. The recipes are nicely laid out and easy to follow. But this is a plan that, although touted as something that can be transitioned into in stages, in reality will require major changes or a lot of food items will be wasted. E.g., meals call for several different ingredients that may need to be prepared separately and used in a variety of dishes. If you don't use the plan, then you will have too much/wasted ingredients (like marinara sauces, etc.).

In trying the recipes, they are very easy to prepare and do taste quite good. There's nothing really exotic here - just variations on things such as baked ziti or chocolate pancakes. Bad ingredients aren't necessarily imitated so much as replaced, so it is about training young taste buds toward healthier foods. But there aren't really any recipes in here that would frustrate or deter little ones from eating.

The book covers recommendations from pregnancy to teen years but the focus is on the elementary school age kids. Ideas for dealing with birthday parties, Disneyland trips, etc. are nicely covered with smart ideas. There are also many testimonials at the end of each chapter with individuals talking about their success stories with their own families. I found those the least interesting, though, since it was a bit to 'rah rah' preaching to the choir in my opinion.

In all, the recipes are quite good and there is good advice to be found here. The writing isn't preachy and neither the author nor the chef come across as zealots who don't understand real-world concerns of the average family and what they would have to go through in order to transition to a plant-based diet. not what I have expected!

This is personal…this book is not what I have expected! I like recipe/cooking books with lots beautiful pictures…and this is not! The book title saying FAMILY…so, I also expect this book to be more fun, kid friendly, and easy steps to follow…a lots recipes looks like complicated with lots ingredients...

About the Author
Mr. James Clark earned a BS and an MS degree from the University of Southern California. He was a professor of business at Pasadena City College for 11 years and subsequently served as dean of the Business Division for 17 years. Before joining the Pasadena City College staff, Mr. Clark was an assistant professor at California State University, Los Angeles, and a teacher at Burbank and La Puente High Schools. He also taught part-time in the extension programs at UCLA and USC. He has held memberships and offices in professional organizations, such as the California Business Education Association, the National Business Education Association, Delta Pi Epsilon, and The Association for Business Communication. Mr. Clark has conducted a number of communication seminars for the Culinary Union, the American Right of Way Association, Caltrans, the Canadian Right of Way Association, the Los Angeles Executive Training Program, and several large legal firms. He also has authored several articles on business communication. In addition to this prominent book, he has co-authored POWER: PROFESSIONAL WRITER'S ELECTRONIC RESOURCE, published by Cengage South-Western. He has author many other successful texts, including CLARKS' ONLINE REFERENCE MANUAL (South-Western College Publishing); A HANDBOOK FOR BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS (Wadsworth Publishing Company); LANGUAGE AND WORD PROCESSING APPLICATIONS (Glencoe/McGraw-Hill); UNIVERSAL TRANSCRIPTION (PWS-KENT Publishing Company); and COLLEGE BUSINESS MACHINES (Gregg/McGraw-Hill).

Dr. Lyn Clark is currently a professor of business in the Computer Applications and Office Technologies Department at Los Angeles Pierce College, where she has been serving as department chair since 2001. She is also chair of the Pierce College Council, the college's shared governance committee, and has served as first vice president of the Academic Senate. Notable college recognitions include the Professor of the Month Award and the Pierce College Foundation American Spirit Award. Dr. Clark earned her BS, MA, and EdD degrees from UCLA. Besides holding memberships in Delta Pi Epsilon, the National Business Education Association, the California Business Education Association, Theta Alpha Delta, and The Association for Business Communication, Dr. Clark has held a series of offices in several of these professional organizations. She also served as community college program director for two NBEA conventions and program chair or co-chair for three CBEA conferences. Dr. Clark has conducted numerous workshops nationwide on methods of teaching business English and communication, computer applications, and voice input. In addition to this successful text, she has written articles for numerous business education periodicals and is the author or coauthor of six business texts: BUSINESS ENGLISH AND COMMUNICATION, LANGUAGE AND WORD PROCESSING APPLICATIONS, and VOICE RECOGNITION WITH SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS, published by Glencoe/McGraw-Hill; UNIVERSAL TRANSCRIPTION, published by PWS-KENT Publishing Company; and A HANDBOOK FOR BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS, published by Wadsworth Publishing Company. She is also the co-author of CLARKS' ONLINE REFERENCE MANUAL and PoWER: PROFESSIONAL WRITER'S ELECTRONIC RESOURCE (South-Western College Publishing).
