Great Book for building your own CNC router

I stumbled upon this book while doing some research for buying a CNC router. After reading through it I decided not to buy a prebuilt system and instead build my own. The author has a unique talent for creating a design that requires only minimal fabrication -- if you can drill holes and saw then you can build this router table. The author also gives dead simple instructions on assembling all the bits.

I'm not sure what the one star reviewer is talking about. The author doesn't sell the parts--he gives some sources for buying the parts (home depot, tractor supply, etc) and recommendations on how to minimize costs.

Very informative

Goes through every aspect of building and setting up your cnc machine. Each chapter has estimated material cost info. The book is well conceived and well illustrated. I really don't know how much info there is on this subject matter but I am happy I purchased the book. I am in no way, shape, or form tech savvy. Armed with the information contained in this book can help to demystify most of the aspects of taking on such an intimidating task. The book seems to be displayed in easy to understand terms that take you step by step through the building process. My method of learning is from a visual aspect so the illustrations are a plus for me .I looked at the prospect of buying a completed cnc machine and also the various kits that you can purchase but found most of them not big enough for my needs. By purchasing the book and buying all the electronics and hardware separately I reasoned that I could build a more bang for the buck cnc machine. I'm sticking to this plan so far so good I hope this is helpful.

About the Author
Robert Capa, born in Hungary, was known for his extreme bravery, amazing eye, and irrestitible charm. He was a co-founder of the Magnum cooperative picture agency and died in 1954 after stepping on a landmine while on an assignment in Indochina. His life and work were inextricably linked, and both have had a marked influence on generations of photographers. Richard Whelan is an outstanding authority on Capa's life and work. He is a New York-based independent cultural historian and the author of several books, including acclaimed biographies of Robert Capa and Alfred Stieglitz.

Capability as Both Artist and Historian

This book is outstanding. As an early B/W film man, one is humbled by the "eye of Capability" that views with the clarity of the meaning and the humanity of the event. In all of Capa's work, the viewer is left with the emotional commitment that the subject captured on the film, could be me. To look at the work of Capability is to study the art of the blending of the event captured in the eye of the camera, to the eye of the print viewer. You will turn the pages of this book slowly and often. And with each viewing will arise a sense of loss at Robert Capa's passing mingled with the touching beauty of work he left us.

Outstanding Collection Of Capa's Finest

Like others have said, the text is sometimes harder to read, but it's still there. And let's be honest, this is a book about photos, not about words! The book is massive. I was expecting it to be much smaller, but was pleasantly surprised. Very good quality in the photos and a must-have collection for Robert Capa fans. It can serve well as a coffee table book and with 937 photos, you almost never run out of something to look at. Lastly, at the price of $32 (for the paperback) you can't find a better deal for such a comprehensive collection of Capa's work!

Excellent collection of Capa photographs in chronological order with locations and background. Too bad most of his D-Day pictures were ruined in the lab...If there is a problem with this book it's that it is so heavy..! Makes great table viewing though...!

About the Author
Robert Sardello, PhD, is cofounder (with Cheryl Sanders-Sardello, PhD, in 1992) of the School of Spiritual Psychology. At the University of Dallas, he served as chair of the Department of Psychology, head of the Institute of Philosophic Studies, and graduate dean. He is also cofounder and a faculty member of the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture, as well as author of more than 200 articles in scholarly journals and cultural publications, and is a former faculty member of the Chalice of Repose Project in Missoula, Montana. Having developed spiritual psychology based in archetypal psychology, phenomenology, and the spiritual science of Rudolf Steiner from more than thirty-five years of research in this discipline, as well as holding positions in two universities, Dr. Sardello is now an independent teacher and scholar, teaching all over the U.S., Canada, and the U.K., as well as the Czech Republic, the Philippines, and Australia. He is a consultant to many educational and cultural institutions and a dissertation adviser at numerous academic institutions. embodying our actions (and the world) with love

This books is delicious and terribly confusing- confusing only when you attempt to read it with your logical, linear and utilitarian mind. Once you abandon all hope of 'grasping' these powerful meditations on the twelve spiritual virtues, you open the possibility of being taken in yourself, into the creative tensions through which virtue manifests in our being and actions.
In "The Power of Soul" Sardello continues demonstrating the art of spiritual psychology. With beautiful and highly observant sketches of inner phenomena, Sardello sheds light upon experiences so subtle that they often slip by our daily consciousness unaware. Yet, by entering into Sardello's description of each virtue's profile, we can slow down and begin to dwell within our own inner processes and, therefore, we can take our own independent steps in bringing the spiritual virtues into the world with our unique, individualized touch.

About the Author

Mario Cerrato is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Financial Economics at the University of Glasgow Business School. He holds a PhD in Financial Econometrics and an MSc in Economics from London Metropolitan University, and a first degree in Economics from the University of Salerno. Mario’s research interests are in the area of financial derivatives, security design and financial market microstructures. He has published in leading finance journals such as Journey of Money Credit and Banking, Journal of Banking and Finance, International Journal of Theoretical and Applied Finance, and many others. Good but not as good as the handbook

I have both the calculations book by Brian McPartland and the NEC Handbook by Brian and his dad Joe. I prefer the handbook more, although you may want both. My problem with this book is that it was not proofed adequately for math errors and typos. I have found at least four computational errors in the examples.
I am not to impressed with this book because it does not take you too far beyond the examples already in the NEC or beyond the obvious. The explainations of why they are computing things the way they are (logic behind the computations) are all explained in the Handbook. Many of the examples are merely duplications of the handbook examples. If you want one good book, buy the Handbook. Don't waste money on the NEC handbooks published by NFPA. They merely waste space by quoting the NEC with some useless comments thrown in. McPartland is the only guy who has ever written a handbook worth having that goes in depth as to why the code is the way it is.

Based on his commentaries during the Ring Cycle's presentation on four consecutive April weekends in 1989, the book takes its title from C.S. Lewis's remarks upon first seeing Arthur Rackham's illustrations for the Cycle: "The sky had turned round. . . . Pure Northerness engulfed me." In a concise, beautifully shaped style, Lee summarizes the plot and analyzes each opera musically and psychologically while also examining the mythological roots and the meaning this work can hold for today's audience. The result is a readable critical essay that celebrates its subject and makes one eager to hear the operas. Highly recommended for academic and public libraries with strong music collections.

M. Owen Lee, CSB, is a Catholic priest and Professor Emeritus of Classics at St. Michael's College, University of Toronto. He is a commentator for the Texaco Metropolitan Opera radio broadcasts and the author of a number of books on opera, including A Season of Opera: From Orpheus to Ariadne (UTP 1998) and Wagner: The Terrible Man and His Truthful Art (UTP 199).

Brief but interesting and insightful

Is there a better writer on opera today than Father Owen Lee? This book provides five essays on The Ring (an introduction plus an essay on each individual Ring opera) which are brief (about 15-20 pages each) but always interesting and insightful. For those new to the Ring, who want to get an idea of "what all the fuss is about" without wading though hundreds of pages of analysis, this book is indispensible. And even for those who come to it with a wealth of knowledge, this book will probably provide a few new insights.

exquisitely succinct interpretation and introduction....

to one of the most multi-layered works of art in existence.

I have wanted to see this opera series for over 20 years, ever since I saw an opera properly prepared by a Wagner fanatic. Finally, I was in a place where I could, so I turned to the various preparations that I could find.

This short book was indisputably one of the best, and it doesn't shy from bold pronouncements and interpretations. Lee is a classical scholar of great learning and brings together a huge range of sources in this 100plus-page book.

First, he gives a synopsis. Then, he interprets it, with full awareness that the reader may disgree. While the content is covered by other reviewers here, I wanted to say that this added immensely to my experience of this uniquely complex work of near-modern art. Plus, it is aimed that at erudite admirers, but to those (like me) desperate for an anchor as I approach the unique intensity of Wagner.

While it relies a bit too heavily on depth psychology, which places this interpretation at a certain time, it is never dogmatic and addresses many of the other philosophical ideas that underlie it. This is my only caveat. Truly great works of art are re-interpreted by every age, and this one will be too. In addition, it cannot be the only source one approaches - you need to listen to the music as well, so this is one supplement.

Beautifully written. Only anomaly is the reference to laser disc technology, with regard to the best recordings of the Ring.

Otherwise, it's a timeless analysis that will serve the uninitiated.

for beginners and advanced

I find myself referring to this book again and again. I always recommend it as an introduction to the Alexander technique. It assisted me greatly when I was first taking Alexander lessons. It is still valuable years later as I refresh and review. Easy to read, entertaining, cogent, and reflective. It reads almost as though you were having conversation with Mr. Gelb. If I had to use one book to introduce a new person to the Alexander technique, theory and understanding, this would be the one.

Prevent Backaches!

Gelb writes very clearly, with good illustrations describing F. M. Alexander's technique for good body use. Many actors, singers, and dancers use this technique, and many people who suffer from joint and muscle disabilities can benefit from this book. Gelb's personal experiences help the reader to understand how to benefit from the techniques and exercises he describes.

Clear, Informative, Inspiring

I started practicing the Alexander Technique over the last couple months. My teacher "assigned" me this book to read, as part of our work together. It's an outstanding book. It's very clear and easy to read. Gelb offers many anecdotal stories and quotes and other stuff like that to make it more enjoyable and inspiring. He tells the fascinating story of how Dr. Alexander developed the technique. Then he proceeds to give a clear and practical explanation of all the different aspects of the technique. I learned a lot!
