Burning Country: Syrians in Revolution and War, by Robin Yassin-Kassab, Leila Al-Shami

In 2011, many Syrians took to the streets of Damascus to demand the overthrow of the government of Bashar al-Assad. Today, much of Syria has become a warzone and many worry that the country is on the brink of collapse.

Burning Country explores the complicated reality of life in present-day Syria with unprecedented detail and sophistication, drawing on new first-hand testimonies from opposition fighters, exiles lost in an archipelago of refugee camps, and courageous human rights activists. Yassin-Kassab and Al-Shami expertly interweave these stories with an incisive analysis of the militarization of the uprising, the rise of the Islamists and sectarian warfare, and the role of Syria’s government in exacerbating the brutalization of the conflict. Through these accounts and a broad range of secondary source material, the authors persuasively argue that the international community has failed in its stated commitments to support the Syrian opposition movements.

Covering ISIS and Islamism, regional geopolitics, new grassroots revolutionary organizations, and the worst refugee crisis since World War Two, Burning Country is a vivid and groundbreaking look at a modern-day political and humanitarian nightmare.

Review
"Yassin-Kassab and Al-Shami want to keep faith with the original impulse of the Syrian revolution—their book is full of fascinating details about the early protest movements—and they also stress the importance of letting Syrians speak. The chief interest of Burning Country...is its inclusion of voices from the front lines. Burning Country lets us listen to many voices we aren’t likely to hear on the news." (New York Review of Books)

"?Those in search of perspective on Syria’s devastation should turn to Burning Country, by the reporter Yassin-Kassab and the activist al-Shami. Their book offers a knowledgeable, empathetic, morally lucid account of the revolt against the Assad regime and an explanation of why—to the horror of many of its supporters—it became a civil war. Burning Country avoids the easy indulgence of indignation; instead, it elicits the voices of many different Syrians involved in the uprising, acknowledging their suffering as well as their courage, intelligence, and humanity, while explaining the terrible choices that have been forced on them." (The Nation)

“Burning Country is both exposition and record of the people behind the Syrian uprising….Yassin-Kassab and Al-Shami work to undo the narrative traps that define popular perceptions of Syria, giving color to the individuals who have mounted alternatives for the country and whose stories are little known. What distinguishes the book from other reporting on Syria is its deep look at how cultural and intellectual production has evolved alongside the conflict.”

(Guernica)

"A number of gripping new books have recently been published that evocatively describe the grim trajectory of Syria’s uprising and war. Burning Country explores how Syria’s peaceful uprising gave way to armed insurgency and sectarian jihad. They offer a sympathetic portrait of a heroic uprising gone wrong, describing in all too painful detail the transformations wrought by armed groups and Assad’s brutality. This is an important, honest and insightful book, well worth anyone’s time." (Washington Post)

"In their new book Burning Country, journalist Yassin-Kassab and human rights activist Al-Shami provide a bracing and timely reminder that no matter how long the war rages or how unreachable a political settlement may appear, the world owes it to the Syrian peopl —especially the peaceful revolutionaries—to listen to their stories and support their cause. Burning Country is a portrait of the opposition, a movement of protest against Bashar al-Assad’s brutal regime, which has been nearly forgotten amid the humanitarian strife, factionalism, and power politics surrounding and driving the conflict."
  (Boston Review)

"This book provides an emotionally restrained history of the Syrian people’s struggle against the Assad regime. Yassin-Kassab and Al-Shami describe a bloody war between two enemies both claiming the soul of a nation. With the Syrian civil war as context, the reader is also presented with instructive and absorbing discussions of the struggles for power and over ideas within the forces claiming the revolutionary mantle. Although the account written in these pages is of a tragedy beyond most readers’ comprehension, it is a tragedy that will continue to be felt around the world, as refugees leave their ruined lives behind in search of some kind of living peace. [Burning Country] should be read by as many people as possible."
  (Counterpunch)

"Provides a comprehensive account of the Syrian revolution from its inception in 2011 to the present. Through interviews with Syrians from across the spectrum of society, the book charts the trajectory of the uprising from the grassroots civil society initiatives that lie at the core of the uprising to its militarization and sectarian polarization." (The Brooklyn Rail)

"It is in British-Syrian writers Yassin-Kassab and Al Shami’s Burning Country that we find a definitive people’s history of the uprising. The book explains in scrupulous detail the context of the uprising, the aims of the revolution, the regime’s brutal response, the causes of militarization, the rise of the Islamists, and the resilience of Syrian society through repression, war, and exile. Yassin-Kassab, Al Shami, and others have ensured that the answer to 'What do Syrians want?' is no longer a mystery." (Dissent)

"Judging from the news coverage, you’d think the Syrian conflict was about everyone but the Syrian people. Syrian perspectives have been almost entirely absent from conversations about the refugee crisis, ISIS and the fate of the Assad regime. Burning Country offers a compelling counter-narrative, rich with the voices of the Syrian people. Equal parts history and analysis, Al-Shami and Yassin-Kassab foreground the grassroots organizations and culture that have flowered in Syria since the revolution began, despite the Assad regime and ISIS’s attacks. Most illuminating is the authors’ discussion of the local councils that oversee the functioning of public services primarily in rebel-controlled territory, of which there are more than 400." (In These Times)

"As well as a non-orthodox telling of the conflict from the point of view of the activists and fighters who took part in the revolution, the book also speaks to the confusion and reluctance of western progressives to engage in the reality of Syria." (Middle East Eye)

"A work that gives a voice to the Syrian revolutionaries who are the political and moral descendants of the brigades that took up arms against Franco in the name of democracy and social justice." (New Politics)

"This is the best book yet interpreting the tragedies that have befallen Syria since the outbreak of civil war in 2011. It offers the best coverage of the war by two Syrian scholars and journalists who have participated in it. They describe the increasingly oppressive government of President Bashar al-Assad before the war.  They also analyze the inability of the secular nationalists to offer meaningful opposition due to societal, class, sectarian, religious, and geographical differences. Syria is, indeed, 'a burning country,' and it will continue to burn. Essential." (Choice)

"[Burning Country] really digs into the various stages and evolutions of the current conflict." (Megan Price, executive director of the Human Rights Data Analysis Group)

"Burning Country is poised to become the definitive book not only on the continuing Syrian conflict but on the country and its society as a whole. Very few books have been written on ‘the kingdom of silence’ that effectively capture how we all got here while not omitting the human voice, the country's heroes and heroines—a combination that is rare but essential for understanding the conflict and its complexities. Yassin-Kassab and Al-Shami have written a must-read book even as the conflict still rages to understand what happened, why it happened and how it should end." (Hassan Hassan, co-author of ISIS: Inside the Army of Terror)

"For decades Syrians have been forbidden from telling their own stories and the story of their country, but here Yassin-Kassab and al-Shami tell the Syrian story. Their words represent the devastated country which has denied them and their compatriots political representation. Burning Country is an indispensable book for those who wish to know the truth about Syria." (Yassin al-Haj Saleh)

"Burning Country could have been titled A People's History of the Syrian Revolution and War: it provides a view from below that constitutes the perfect antidote to geopolitical reductionism. This book is unique in its combination of first-hand material derived from fieldwork, factual and analytical rigour, and unshakable faith in the Syrian people's struggle for justice and dignity." (Thomas Pierret Lecturer, University of Edinburgh, Director of the Centre for the Advanced Study of the Arab World)

"By far the best account of the Syrian uprising yet. It is a comprehensive and nuanced analysis of a multifaceted geopolitical conflict and myriad grassroots struggles. Anyone interested in comprehending the highly convoluted situation in Syria must read this extremely sophisticated book." (Dr. Yasser Munif, co-founder of the Global Campaign of Solidarity with the Syrian Revolution)

A commentary on the inter-connectedness of all nature.
By A Customer
While exploring the uncharted islands of the Javanese Atoll, Dr. Watson's boat is unexpectedly caught in a typhoon of incredible ferocity. When the storm abated, Dr.Watson and his crew discovered they had been carried nearly four hundred miles off their original course. With their boat badly damaged they headed for the first land they saw and discovered not only a refuge from the sea, but an island whose inhabitants possess an exceptional connection to the environment that surrounds them.
Here were a people whose primary language is dance, who interpret sound as color, and who displayed a profound understanding of the power within everything that surrounded them; whether it be rock or tree, wind or sea. This is a journal of a personal odessey that changed the life of the author and will influence the life of everyone who reads it. The power of this book is not in its words but in the understandings that will resonate within the reader as the story of this incredible experience unfolds.

An all-time classic!
By Cynthia Sue Larson
Biologist Lyall Watson travels to Indonesia in search of magic... and finds a 'dancing island' and a girl who comes of age to become a shaman and healer. For those who simply enjoy a good story, this is an excellent book. For those who realize that the magic described in this book is real, it's even better. Watson is a first-rate story-teller, and I would give this book ten stars if such a thing were possible!

I enjoyed it a lot
By I. C. Onur
I think Mr. Watson did an interesting twist by candy wrapping many ideas and philosophies under the guise of a memoir. I enjoyed it a lot. At times I felt like certain aspects did not fit as tight as others with the narrative but it didn't deter me from enjoying his work. A very good read.

The Road to Wellville, by T.C. Boyle

Will Lightbody is a man with a stomach ailment whose only sin is loving his wife, Eleanor, too much. Eleanor is a health nut of the first stripe, and when in 1907 she journeys to Dr. John Harvey Kellogg's infamous Battle Creek Spa to live out the vegetarian ethos, poor Will goes too.

So begins T. Coraghessan Boyle's wickedly comic look at turn-of-the-century fanatics in search of the magic pill to prolong their lives--or the profit to be had from manufacturing it. Brimming with a Dickensian cast of characters and laced with wildly wonderful plot twists, Jane Smiley in the New York Times Book Review called The Road to Wellville "A marvel, enjoyable from beginning to end."

Boyle's wickedly funny spoof of the turn-of-the-century health spa craze is packaged in a 50,000-copy "cereal boxed" edition.
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal
YA-This novel gives readers insight into the health attitudes and morals of the early 1900s. It's also a riot to read. Boyle points out the ease with which medicine was manufactured at the turn of the century, and the dangers of taking them. John Harvey Kellogg, founder of Kellogg cereals, is mercilessly portrayed as an unethical doctor who purposely misinformed his patients. He supported his outlandish claims with circus tricks that demonstrated the violent potential of eating meat. The man is also shown to have had a humanitarian side. He adopted over 52 children, many of whom went on to become successful doctors and lawyers. Another of the main characters, Will Lightbody, unwittingly becomes addicted to Sears's White Star Liquor Cure. He has a chronically upset stomach, and the tonic his physician prescribes has alcohol as the main ingredient. Will's wife, in a desperate attempt to cure his alcoholism, surreptitiously slips "the cure" into his evening coffee-the active ingredient being opium. And so the story continues.

From Library Journal
Focusing on the "Biggest Little City in the U.S.A.," Boyle provides a delightfully comic anatomy of a society obsessed with miraculous cures and spectacular successes. In 1907, Battle Creek, Michigan, is a magnet for rich seekers of health and robust seekers of wealth. The former flock to John Harvey Kellogg's health spa, where the regimen requires a change in the intestinal flora via five enemas per day. The latter attempt to con their way into the booming breakfast food business. Rich with historical and imaginative details, the novel includes a romantic love story and a fierce battle between a determined father (Kellogg) and an evil son (the only one of 42 adoptive children who defies the great healer's efforts at reform). In this inventive and highly entertaining story, Boyle's proven talents are again displayed in rare form. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 1/93.

Loved the movie
By Neil Ludlam
Loved the movie, so tried the book. They're different, but both are good. My first real job was at a small mountain San that was an offshoot of the Kellogg San in Battle Creek, so this was partly a trip back. But I think others will enjoy it too.

"A steak is every bit as deadly as a gun."
By S. Calhoun
At the turn of the 20th century Battle Creek, Michigan was a magnet for the health-conscious while simultaneously attracting breakfast food speculators from around the country. In THE ROAD TO WELLVILLE T.C. Boyle spins an insightful and entertaining tale combining both of these historical movements. After surviving many attempts to making breakfast food products that were sabotaged by his jealous brother, he turned his attention to developing a sanitarium to launch his firm beliefs in a scientific diet that will treat the nation's ill health. After much hard work and determinism Kellogg's dream soon materialized as the sick traveled from afar to undergo daily enemas and milk diets in an effort to cleanse their systems.
According to the back cover this book is "wickedly comic" and "a comic tour de force", but I felt that this book wasn't all that laugh-out-loud funny. Sure, there is a plenty of T.C. Boyle's smart and intelligent prose but rarely did I find myself giggling while reading. The only passages that made me smile included the antics of Dr. Kellogg's disobedient foster son, especially the Christmas caroling scene.
All in all, I appreciated this book for its unique glimpse into this often-forgotten piece of American history; it's difficult to go wrong with T.C. Boyle as he always seems to spin an entertaining story.

Father Knows Best, Or So He Says
By IRA Ross
John Harvey Kellogg was a man ahead of his time. From the family that invented the corn flake, Dr. Kellogg ran a Sanitarium in Battle Creek, Michigan, that was one of the first of its kind in America. Concerned with the physiologic health of its inmates (mostly from the wealthy and upper middle class population), Dr. Kellogg prescribed lots of exercise, enemas, a diet consisting of milk, vegetables, fruits, and grains. No meat of any kind was allowed. The inbibing of alcohol was forbidden as was any kind of sexual activity. Sleeping quarters, even for husbands and wives, were strictly segregated. Dr. Kellogg also performed various experiments to create different types of foods (e.g. corn pulp). He even kept a laboratory holding containers of various animals' feces which Dr. Kellogg believed had the same nutritional value as a steak. Dr. Kellogg was a rigid, self-righteous man who thoroughly believed in his infallability. Never mind that one of his patient's skin was steadily becoming green and that another one was accidentally electrocuted while lolling in a sinusodial bath. We later learn that Dr. Kellogg misdiagnosed one of his patients as having "autointoxication" (all of his patients were allegedly suffering from this malady), when what he really had was an intestinal ulcer. Nor would Dr. Kellogg brook any disagreements with him or his methods. Besides his closest competitor, C.W. Post (whose slogan, "the road to wellville" Dr. Kellogg thoroughly despised), the individual who gave Dr. Kellogg the most trouble was his adopted son, George, who was extraordinarily hostile, rebellious, and downright psychotic. Dr. Kellogg believed that George was the only failure in his brood of 42 adopted children.
_The Road To Wellville_ is populated with many colorful and eccentric characters. These include the businessman Will Lightbody (whose name perfectly described him) and his wife, Eleanor, who convinced her husband to accompany her to the San. Both, according to Dr. Kellogg were very ill. Will, who occasionally strayed from the San to partake of hamburger sandwiches and liquid libations, must endure severe punishment for his recalcitrance. Eleanor was befriended by Lionel Badger, in whom Dr. Kellogg deeply mistrusted, and who was a radical anti-vivisectionist and a thorough believer in nudism. Eleanor was also treated outside the San by the German, monocle wearing Dr. Spitzvogel, who would have gone to prison if his methods were judged by today's standards. There is young Charlie Ossining, whom Will and Eleanor met while on their train trip to Battle Creek. Will and others invest in Charlie's breakfast food scheme. Charlie hoped that his venture would enable him to cash in during the then current breakfast food craze. Unfortunately, Charlie's plans go awry because he must contend with Bender, his flagrently dishonest business partner.

An universal novel
By Oscar Arturo Ney Rivera
It is a world classic, that you can compare easily with Don Quixote, only that this book is nearer to us. The only problem
is the translation ( tradutore-traditore), as any satire it lost a lot when you read in other than no slavonic lenguage. If you
read in chex or russian you can soil yourself with laughter. This book is not only about satire, is about humanity with any
of its cualities and evils, is about you and me; you can see in its pages your personality pros and fails. Almost unknown
by the so-called western culture it is a compulsory reading for any person with a minimun of culture.
I am a Latin-american citizen, born , educated in Central America but I feel this opus as a mine. It is universal.

The Dark Art of Malingering
By John M. Lane
Herr Schweik, who seems to have no first name, has established himself in the field of forging pedigrees for dogs thereby promoting mongrels to salons in Vienna under false pretenses. He is the creation of Jaroslav Hasek, who was (like the good soldier Schweik) conscripted into the Royal and Imperial Army of the Hapsburgs in 1915.

Captured by the Russians, Hasek spent five years as a Prisoner of War and then found his way first into the Czech Legion under Russian command and then into the Bolshevik Army. Somehow, he got back to Prague in 1920 and began his masterpiece, THE GOOD SOLDIER SCHWEIK which was promptly banned by almost every army in the world.

Why? Because it is a guide to the art of malingering. Schweik arrives at the recruit depot on crutches shouting patriotic slogans.

Schweik survives the intricacies of the penal barracks, the lunatic asylum, the hospital and about everything else Fate throws at him.

Schweik is Sad Sack on steroids and I found him funny, bawdy and a thorough rotter. In other words, the good soldier Schweik is a man for our time. Furthermore, I'm writing to Congress and recommending that this book be banned immediately from all military posts.

Seriously, if you are interested in World War I, you'll find a perspective in THE GOOD SOLDIER SCHWEIK that a lot of old soldiers would probably recognize, but probably not comment on. It's worth having and I gave it five stars.

Classic novel; incomplete older translation
By G.C.
I must first provide the caveat that this is the only translation of "The Good Soldier Svejk" that I've read. This is the 1930 translation by Paul Selver. Two small points that may be indicative of what might be considered "missing" about this version is that the title character's name is spelled "Schweik", i.e. the Germanized version of his name, rather than Svejk, even without the Czech diacriticals, which would have been no trouble to spell in "conventional" lettering, in hindsight. Also, even though the short bio at the start mentions that Hasek had "completed" 4 volumes of his intended 6, this paperback can appear confusing in that only 3 books are specifically laid out in the index and in this edition.

By all accounts, the later translation by Cecil Parrott gives a fuller account of the Hasek original, such as including the 4th volume, left incomplete at Hasek's death, as well as being more explicit. The latest translation, by Zenny Sadlon and Emmett Joyce, is actually appearing in 3 separate volumes. In fairness, I should state that at least one writer on "Svejk", Thomas Kovach, actually prefers the Selver translation to the Parrott translation. If you come across the Selver translation and you're interested in the novel, and keep in mind that you won't be getting a complete English rendition and picture of the novel, feel free to dive in.

Un bel libro diverso dal solito

Negotiating Across Cultures: International Communication in an Interdependent World, by Raymond Cohen

For this substantially revised edition of his 1991 book, Raymond Cohen has added two new chapters, updated previous examples, and added numerous recent ones, especially concerning U.S. trade agreements. Newly added cases include the negotiations over NAFTA, China's most-favored-nation status, the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, and the Okinawa bases. All in all, about 40 percent of the text is new.

Cohen explores how cultural factors have affected U.S. dealings with Japan, China, Egypt, India, and Mexico. He demonstrates that there are two quite different models of negotiation: "low context," a predominantly verbal and explicit style typical of individualistic societies such as the United States, and "high context," a style associated with nonverbal and implicit communication more typical of traditionally interdependent societies. He concludes the book with ten specific recommendations for the intercultural negotiator.

Very Helpful Reference for People with International Contacts
By Bomb Man58
Professor Raymond Cohen has produced a well written and researched book on the protocols of negotiations in an international scenario. Different cultures have different approaches to negotiation and settling issues of mutual benefit or concern.

While the book describes some high level negotiation examples between countries, it is also very useful for explaining various cultural norms and modalities. The author looks at words, gestures, the use of silence and approaches. Having worked in various international settings myself, I found the book extremely useful for insight into how to sit down with people from various cultures and talk through a variety of issues such as complaints, getting cooperation and negotiating agreements without giving offence and securing mutual trust and agreement.

The book looks at the various issues relating to negotiation with example case studies and commentary on these examples.

In summary, a very useful book for anyone who is involved with international affairs, works overseas or may have dealings with colleagues, or business contacts internationally. The book is well written, easily read and well researched and referenced. Well done, Professor Cohen!

Not just for diplomats, but a mixed bag for the corporate world....
By \m/
Negotiating Across Cultures is something of a diplomat's "pocket" guide to cross-cultural negotiation. The book examines key topics such as high and low context communication and the differences in how Western and Eastern cultures communicate with each other. The book is primarily written from the perspective of a low context, US negotiator that is seeking an agreement with a high context negotiator.

The book combines the aforementioned concepts with a number of real life case studies that are used to highlight various aspects of the negotiation and to address cultural gaps. Cohen paints an interesting picture of high and low context negotiation styles and preaches a flexible style, in many ways akin to the Japanese "awase" or adaptive style. He suggests that negotiators should focus extensively on understanding the cultural preferences of their adversary and that they should be aware of their own cultural biases. While the concepts in the book are focused around diplomatic, rather than corporate or individual negotiations, the underlying ideas can easily be applied to a wide variety of situations.

While the concepts and examples are fantastic, Cohen takes an overly academic approach to writing. Wording tends to be overly complicated and I often found myself having to re-read a paragraph to understand the underlying message. I would love to see an adaptation of this book into something a bit more concise and easier to understand. Cohen clearly has a fantastic grasp of the gaps in Eastern and Western negotiation and communication styles, but I suspect the average reader will find themselves skipping pages in search of "gems."

Not just for negotiators!
By eric k
Without a doubt, the lessons in Negotiating Across Cultures are valuable tools for the international businessperson or anyone wishing to avoid clumsy mistakes with others from other cultures. Even if one has no interest in working overseas, I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to gain an insight into the way others of non-Western perspective might react to the Western-based logic and negotiating styles.

Given the many examples in the book, it is difficult to ignore the fact that others of foreign descent may simply have different perspectives on which to base their arguments. What happens when the other party is clinging to culture-based arguments and the best one can do is present an alternate settlement which is based on a myopic American-based understanding of the opposing party's position? Without being aware of such points, it is all too easy to simply write off a person’s behavior or reasoning to personal idiosyncrasy. I would submit that reading Negotiations Across Cultures will take your negotiation and mediation skills to the next level. As US business continues to reach out to other countries and as foreigners continue to increase diversity within the US, it only makes sense that someone wishing to properly navigate these seas be equipped with the right tools.
