Grade 1-4-Anderson turns a little-known historical tidbit into a fresh, funny, and inspirational alternative to the standard Thanksgiving stories. Alarmed that the observance was dying out since many states did not observe it at all and those that did had no agreement as to date, Sarah Hale began 38 years of letter writing in support of making it a national holiday. Ignored or refused by administration after administration, she persisted until at last, President Lincoln, possibly persuaded by her argument that it would help to reunite the union, declared the fourth Thursday in November as a national holiday in 1863. The writing sparkles and is well matched by the spirited and irreverent caricatures (including Native people and pilgrims with feathers in their headbands and hats). Lively and provocative sentences involve readers. Anderson doesn't state the facts; she reveals them, unveils them, and celebrates them, and her text certainly shows that persistence and eloquence can succeed. Faulkner takes every opportunity to provide visual humor. He draws Sarah and other ladies storming the doors of the state house with a giant quill pen as a battering ram. His busts of recalcitrant presidents and his graphic depiction of the "other things" President Buchanan had "on his mind" convey complex historical concepts while adding to the humorous tone of the book. K-Gr. 3. Sarah Hale was a magazine editor, mother, teacher, and feminist (though not a suffragette). She also "saved" Thanksgiving by imploring President Lincoln to declare it a national holiday. Appalled that Thanksgiving, a holiday that could bring people together, was being ignored by many Americans, she had appealed to several previous presidents--Taylor, Fillmore, Pierce, Buchanan--but only Lincoln responded. In 1863, Sarah saw Lincoln declare Thanksgiving a national holiday. Anderson gives an inherently interesting story an extra boost with a terse, amusing text ("never underestimate dainty little ladies"), but it is Faulkner's art, reminiscent of David Small's work in So You Want to Be President (2000), that stands out. The pictures are droll and funny, often going beyond the bounds of the text to make an ironic point. The back matter is particularly solid for a picture book; there's additional information about Hale and about Thanksgiving as well as a brief overview of the Civil War and of slavery. One of the best books to read to little kids.

This is my first Amazon Review. I usually can't get my lazy self to write a review even when for an excellent high quality work such as this one.

But this book is so exceptionally well done that not only did it motivate me to write a review, it motivated me to buy some copies of it so I could give it to my kid's school and their cousins. The book's writer (and illustrator) go to great lengths to make it entertaining and very informative.

I think the really good reviewers have already written good reviews of this book, so let me just give a quick list of "Pros/Cons"

Pro:
----
* The message: The story is about a great American, hard work, and the ability of one persistent person to make a difference
* The humor: The humor of this book is not ugly or over the top, it is on two levels so it would make both parents and kids crack up. Humor is expressed both through text and the illustrations. This book is not a serious narration of facts.
* The organization: The book is really in two parts. The first section is the richly illustrated low-text exposition of what Sarah did. Then there is a detailed bio about Sarah and a little history about her time.
* Sensitivity: The book is written from a liberal perspective (in the non-political meaning of the phrase), it doesn't look down on Sarah (even when explaining that she wasn't your typical woman's rights advocate), it doesn't demonize the south, it doesn't whitewash the north. The illustrator draws depictions from every kind of American -- not just the white ones that I grew up seeing in my books about Thanksgiving when I was a child.
* Respect: Even though this book is short, it doesn't disrespect its readers, even the youngsters, by oversimplifying anything. The history lesson even clarifies how bad our country acted at times (explaining how the Navajo were treated during the civil war)

O.K. So this isn't really a major knock, but the hard cover book could be a little sturdier. It is fairly well bound but I felt the pages could be a little thicker so they would survive a class room for years.

Yippie-Skippie for Laurie Halse Anderson, a descendant of Sarah Josepha Buell Hale! Laurie seems to be every bit as bold, brave, stubborn and smart as her main character, Sarah. This 2002 juvenile literature has loose Rockwell-like drawings in soft, harvest colors. Each page logically flows into the text with innocence and humor as Laurie tells of her 'heroine with pen' in a uniquely modern, conversational fashion that evokes the spirit of forging ahead into new frontiers. She makes it easy for children to grasp the idea of tackling and persevering a task to get it done right. In Sarah's case, quality took time, something our fast-paced children can't hear enough. It's an eventful book of fact, feelings and hard work that are so necessary for successful results. Boys will have an appreciation for Sarah's fortitude (not just in football season) and girls will be inspired to carry on the overseeing spirit of Sarah. Laurie really makes history a fun read! Thank you, Laurie! You are most kind to carry on the "get-to-it-to-get-it-done" attitude that obviously runs through your veins! The pen IS mightier than the sword.

Hardly half-an-hors-d-oeuvres worth...

+ I know this is only supposed to be a beginner's introduction to the work of a notoriously difficult thinker, but this is No-cal Foucault Lite, the rice-cake of primers, so airy its hardly there at all.

+ First thing I'd like to know is who is the author? I mean, I see her name on the book but darned if I could find a bio or any credentials for her listed in the book. I'd like to think she had some...credentials, I mean...and wasn't just a hungry freelance writer with no special knowledge of Foucault who offered to pen a Foucault guide on the quick.

+ Because that's pretty much what this book reads like.

+ Well, whoever the author is, she seemed to resent that Foucault, being gay, didn't have enough to say explicitly about women and she felt compelled to point that out in annoying and unnecessary introjections throughout the text.

+ Do not pay the cover price for this book. It's simply not worth it. You could read it in the bookstore while your kid is enjoying Waldo Storytime or whatever in the children's section. Or pick it up, used, for a dollar somewhere. I'd say this is the rule of thumb with any of these "for beginner's" guides, but especially so in this case.

+ In fact, you likely could garner as much information about Foucault reading the back covers of his books--maybe even more.

+ The more of this review I write the more I realize how poor this book was and how dissatisfied I was with it. It's losing stars faster than a wax museum on fire. I can't truthfully say that it was a waste of time to read, because it hardly took any time at all to read. But if I opened the book knowing one scintilla's worth of knowledge of Foucault I closed it hardly knowing one-thousandth of a micron more.

+ In other words, I'm pretty much just as stupid as I was before which made reading this book kind of pointless.

Yes, It Really Is For Beginners

This is by far the best intro to Foucault I've read. Thinking like Foucault use lots of complex language and have really complex ideas, but this book explains those ideas in a very easy-to-understand way. It's short, so you'll be finished quickly, but you will get a really good (introductory) sense of Foucault's entire project. That sense will stick with you pretty well, too, because every page is illustrated. This is an important thinker, and I can't imagine a better introduction. Read it.

Interesting Simple Intro

As a beginner, the book presents Foucault as a documenter - discussing and disecting the history of power and professional relations. He covers knowledge and power, sexuality, prisons, mental health.... The span is enormous, highlighting Foucault's multidisciplinary reputation.

The downside of the book (indeed a limit of the Manga-like series) is it spends too much time on Foucault's role as as a chronicler of data, and leaves the reader on their own for much of his conclusions. An example: the book talks of Foucault's description of the medical clinic and doctor's "Gaze" but the book doesn't share if Foucault thought this was good or bad. Given Foucault's well deserved reputation as a complicated writer, this beginner could use the help.

Great Read

I highly enjoyed this book. Sadat in many ways was a man of tremendous wisdom and political savvy. His memoirs span his birth, the free officer movement, Nasser's reign, and Sadat's presidency. Curiously, the book ends right before the Camp David Accords as he talks about the hopes he has in working with Carter. Sadat has many fascinating insights into Egyptian politics and the Middle East. I highly recommend this book.

The add stated, " Brand new first printing hb with dj per image above, no marks or signs of use, just a hint of shelf wear" however, when I opened the book it had the name "brad" written on the inside and the letter "B" written on the inside of the dust jacket. As for "just a hint of shelf wear", I would say that this has a little more than just a hint, but I must be honest and say that I am a bit critical of the dust jacket because I am buying this for collector purposes. I am just planning on buying a brand new book and donating this one to my local library.

A Favorite Book of Mine

A wonderful autobiography of a kind and humble man. I remember his simple delight in eating a roasted onion from his grandmothers fire pit. I read this book in 1978 and thanks to Amazon, I can buy another copy to give to a friend 35 years later.

This volume, one of a series of monographs on new museum architecture, provides a careful look at the design of one of Europe's premier art institutions, and includes an interview with the architects responsible for the recent expansions.
