Wonderful, meaningful story!

Ever since he was a little kid, Liam wasn't little. By the time he turns twelve, he's way taller than his dad, let alone his classmates. He has to shave. Everyone mistakes him for an adult--and he hates it. Until...he's the only kid allowed to ride the new super ride at the amusement park...and adults treat him with respect...and he (almost) gets away with test-driving a Porsche. And he somehow cons his way into being the "parent chaperone" to the first four kids in space. Which is absolutely cosmic, as he would say--until the kids start acting like typical kids and break the ship. What they need is a dad to come rescue them--but Liam is the only dad they've got.
You come across a few books in your lifetime that really surprise you. You come across a few that make you laugh until you're crying. You come across a few that have such profound depth and meaning that when you finish them they settle into your gut so you'll always remember the way you felt reading them. You hardly ever come across one that embodies all these qualities; Cosmic is such a book. I finished it a week ago and held off writing the review so I didn't just gush meaninglessly (I did that to my family and friends). Now that I've stopped raving, here are my more organized thoughts:
To start with the negative (note the use of the singular), the structure was confusing. Liam begins telling his story to his parents from space, through recording himself on his phone--which makes for a very cool opening. But once we get to the point in the story where he began telling it, there is a disconnect. The time and circumstances have to be reestablished a few times, which can be disorienting. Unfortunately, it felt that a story which could more simply have been told in past tense after it was all over, began in the middle for the sake of a killer opening paragraph.
That said--deal with the confusion. Seriously. Because... we're on to the positives: brilliant voice, wonderful humor, the coolest tribute to Roald Dahl ever. (You'll have to figure it out yourselves.) If you like Science fiction, you'll be impressed by the author's attention to research and detail; if you don't, you'll still love Cosmic for the characters, the story, the subtlety with which a very important message is conveyed.
Ok, I'm going to go gush to my family some more now.

Over the last 20 years, Santiago Calatrava has made literally thousands of drawings and paintings and more than a hundred sculptures. Many of his drawings show the human body - often in motion - alone, or in groups, or in an architectural context. Others show preliminary ideas which lead to constructions, details, sculptures, and buildings.

This book contains a selection of over 200 drawings, water colours and depictions of sculptures, chosen by the architect and the author because they are particularly well-suited to showing the significance of his artistic work as the basis for his architectural designs. A drawing is always the starting point for an entire laboratory of ideas. Many of the themes and forms which Calatrava investigates and develops on this level are subsequently transformed into sculptures and go on to provide the inspiration for his bridges, railway stations, airports, museums and even dining tables.

This volume analyses how Calatrava's creative ideas ripen and develop, from the initial drawings, to the sculptures, finally attaining completion in the realised buildings. At the same time, it examines the interfaces between the fine arts, engineering and architecture.

Disappointing

Being a designer myself, I am very much interested in the thought process and preliminary drawings made by one of the great recent names in the field. I was definitely looking for inspirational drawings and to peer over the shoulder of a great in a similar field to see their process.

What I found instead was the disappointingly simple marks of a pretty amateur water colourist. I'm sure that this might be inspirational and interesting to people outside of visual arts and design, but compared to Arkitekture by Zaha Hadid, which has beautiful 3d renderings, models, pictures of her abstract scultptural work etc, it's woefully inadequate.

I won't be buying another book on his work without seeing it in the flesh and getting a good idea of what's really in there.

GARBAGE!

I'm sorry but these must be paid reviews. This book is AWFUL. I'm in a bachelor's program for RC and this book is absolute garbage. Too wordy and it seems wordy to just fill space on a page. I haven't had a single classmate say anything good about this book. Those that are actually trying to read for PFT class are using another book. If your professors requires this book like mine does then get it but gain your knowledge from another book first to understand PFT and then come back to read the required chapters in this book

About the Author
Andrew J. DuBrin is Professor Emeritus of Management in the E. Philip Saunders College of Business at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he served as department chairman and team leader. Dr. DuBrin has taught courses and conducted research in leadership, management, organizational behavior, and career management. He presents at other colleges, career schools, and universities. He received his Ph.D. in Industrial Psychology from Michigan State University. Dr. DuBrin has experience in human resource management and is a business and personal consultant in career management, leadership, and management development. Dr. DuBrin is an established author of both textbooks and trade books, and he contributes to professional journals, magazines, newspapers, and online media. He has written textbooks on management, leadership, organizational behavior, human relations, political behavior in organizations, and impression management. His trade books address management issues from charisma, team play, and office politics to overcoming career self-sabotage, and coaching and mentoring.

This book is outrageously overpriced. The content is common-sense, with very little insight or theoretical or research basis. Many of the sections which claim to list "leadership" characteristics are incredibly sexist. For a graduate level seminar in Management, I found this text completely laughable.

A Good, Simplified Textbook

This is the textbook used for my Managerial Leadership class. It is easy reading and mostly common sense principles. I do like the soft cover and the ease in understanding the information. Pretty good as a textbook.
