Thank & Grow Rich: A 30-Day Experiment in Shameless Gratitude and Unabashed Joy, by Pam Grout

Important disclaimer: This book is not for everyone—just those who want to have more fun, more adventures, and more magic in their life.

Thank & Grow Rich is for anyone interested in hooking up with the magnanimous energy field of the cosmos. Author Pam Grout, who likes to call herself the Warren Buffet of Happiness, says it all starts with getting on the frequency of joy and gratitude.

Thanking (rather than thinking) puts us on an energetic frequency—a vibration—that calls in miracles.

Science has proven that when we observe the world from a place of gratitude, when we use our attention to spot beauty and gaze at wonder, we develop the capacity to radically rev up our day-to-day experience.

Brazen gratitude, it seems, provides a portal—an entry point—straight into the heart of the field of infinite possibilities described in Grout’s bestseller E-Squared.

This book also offers an updated perspective on abundance, which goes way beyond financial capital. It shows readers how to grow and expand their creative capital, their social capital, their spiritual capital, and much, much more!

There’s even an abundance worksheet that tracks your thank-and-grow rich portfolio and a money-back guarantee offering four personalized gifts straight from the always-accommodating universe.

Your credit union might offer a butter dish or a koozie, but an investment in this book comes with your own personal sign from the universe, an answer to an important question, a customized totem, and a one-of-a-kind gift from the natural world.

But more importantly, this 30-day experiment will upgrade your life experience from ho-hum to wahoo! From like sucks to life rocks! From woe is me to yippie-ti-yi-yay!!

Light hearted, but completely serious...wonderful!
By Kimberley523
I preordered this book months ago. I forgot it was coming out this month so was very pleasantly surprised to find it on my doorstep Friday evening. I started reading it that night and while I'm only half way through the book, it is amazing. So many wonderful quotes! So much thought provoking information.

Pam has such a down to earth, honest, funny, light-hearted style. But don't let that fool you there is pure gold in these pages. I did one of the exercises this morning before getting out of bed and immediately felt a shift in how I was viewing the coming day.

If you are wanting to change how you view your life and the world in general, don't wait, get this book.

Thank and Grow Bitter?
By A Reader
I have successfully used the law of attraction to transform every aspect of my life in the last three years (I am currently in the process of buying a lake house in a major metropolitan area). I rarely write negative reviews, but this is the most relentlessly negative law of attraction book I have ever read. And I feel like I need to give people who are currently dealing with challenging financial circumstances a heads up.

When people feel good about themselves and the world, they naturally behave with generosity and kindness. No one needs to be guilt-tripped or frightened into being a good person by being told 75 people will die of malnutrition in the time it takes to finish their cereal (this is an actual example from the book).

My husband and I donate a large proportion of our income, but I still think it is fine for people to have mega-mansions and sports cars (2 things Grout criticizes), because I believe in the infinite wealth of the universe. Fewer people are dying of malnutrition now than they were in the 60's, even though the population has ballooned since then and the rich have gotten richer, because a rising tide (or vibration) lifts all boats.

There is a lot of split energy and contradiction in this book. She takes frequent potshots at other self-help authors and the pointlessness of self help in general, even though that is how she makes a living, and almost all the 'party games' are just thinly disguised ploys to market the book on instagram.

I can honestly say almost all the self help I have read has really helped me. Pretty much anything a person resonates with will work. There are infinite possible routes to the same destination.

She also criticizes meditation at several points, even though many of the people featured in the book attribute their success to a meditation practice, and it is the cornerstone of various completely valid spiritual paths.

She berates the 1% and romanticizes pre-industrial societies, while also jetting around the world and zip-lining at luxury resorts or eating barbecued lobster in the rain forest. She brags about having resources 'out the wazoo,' while putting other rich people down multiple times.

I loved Pam's first book. She just needs to clear some beliefs before she writes the next one.

If someone is struggling financially and is looking for something that will transform their life into the most incandescently happy and prosperous it has ever been through gratitude, I highly recommend The Magic (The Secret). This book is completely positive (There is a reason Rhonda Byrne is the most successful law of attraction teacher. She obviously practices what she preaches!). It is also easy to find used for the price of a cup of coffee.

I send anyone reading this all my love and highest intentions for your joy and success. You've got this.

Disappointing
By Dilek
I really tried to keep myself from writing a bad review for this one, but one can only handle so much self-restraint, right?
First of all, let me say I'm a huge Pam Grout fan. I devoured E-Squared, E-Cubed, and Jumpstart Your Metabolism. I anticipated this latest book for 3 months, my hopes were high.
The book started off great, too. Very inspired thoughts on gratitude, I highlighted a good chunk of that first half. Until I reached the exercises (or Party Games as Pam calls them). I had expected a practical series of 30 experiments as the title suggests, but these party games were put together very sloppily, they were clearly added just to please the editor (as Pam admits). I didn't even get what I was supposed to do in many of them. They read like a stream-of-consciousness rather than, you know, a book.

What's worse, Pam keeps guilt-tripping rich people (or those aspiring for great riches) throughout the exercises, suggesting the more you have, the less other people will. That is so backwards for a LOA writer! All the buzz she created during Part 1, she kills in Part 2. It's as if 2 different authors wrote the 2 parts.

I had to force myself to finish this one, and felt worse than I did when I had started, and I think this says a lot about a book that's supposedly on gratitude. So consider yourself warned. Sorry Pam, but I think you need to study some Abraham-Hicks and clear those contradicting beliefs before you set out to write another of these.

Pulse (National Security Thriller), by Robert Cook

Iran's nightmare nuclear attack on Israel is imminent, and former Marine and CIA Special Operations hunk, Alejandro Mohammed Cuchulain--otherwise known as Cooch--is back! Wielding his stunning brand of physical violence with the grace of a matador, Cooch brings intellect and Islamic scholarship to bear on the Iranians to entice them back to their senses in this third installment of the series. But before that can happen, a US-delivered electromagnetic pulse fries every circuit in Iran.

In this gripping national security thriller, Cooch and his elite entourage assemble again to choreograph the US response to Iran's plan. Smart men and even smarter women take center stage in the most exclusive inner sanctums of Washington, DC. But ultra-sophisticated computers, powerful weaponry, and technology are the real stars. Cell phones project lessons on a screen one minute and summon a drone the next, and the eponymous pulse that seeks and destroys anything with a wire or a chip, can take down the Internet, television, radio, pacemakers, and operating rooms in seconds.

Robert Cook takes us front and center into chilling scenarios in the Middle East, and into the complicated mesh of personalities at work on both sides. Whether you're a Cooch aficionado or a first-time Cook reader, you'll be swept up as the action travels from Morocco to upscale East Coast enclaves and back to the torpedo-infested waters off of Iran. You'll be on the edge of your seat as Iran receives the unmistakable message that the US is not going to sit back and watch from the sidelines.

Cooch “jumped the shark”
By Pumpman
Cooch “jumped the shark”. When I read the first book of this series, I thought Alex (“Cooch”) was a mix of Clark Kent and James Bond. I really enjoyed that book. Missed book #2 in the series, and picked up #3 (“Pulse”) hoping that my adrenaline might be pumped again … not to happen. Cooch is now a full-time Muslim/Islamic apologist, involved in long tirades on the benefits of reading and understanding ancient philosophers, and touting the Koran. What happened? “Pulse” is boring … not enough action; and (to me) politically incorrect. Skip this one … I couldn’t finish it.

Review of Pulse
By D.E. Haggerty
I was a bit concerned about my objectivity in reading this novel as I live in a Muslim country that is moving away from personal liberties but the author’s biography impressed the daylights out of me. I just had to read what he could write! Cook has writing talent as mostly evidenced by the final third of the novel. The battle scenes were well-written and action-packed. This is definitely the area in which Cook’s talents are best used. Cook was also able to describe various locations with a detail that made the reader feel like they were in the room with the protagonists.

I expected a novel reminiscent of Tom Clancy or Robert Ludlum and in many ways it was. There was a vast amount of detail and information making it obvious that Cook had done a ton of research for this novel. Unfortunately, the information portrayed in Pulse was presented like information dumps instead of integrated into the story. This made the book feel at times like a textbook instead of a novel. Much of the information was also repeated which made me roll my eyes and tempted me to quit reading. These information dumps were often disguised as conversations making the conversations completely unrealistic and appear to be lectures instead of intellectual discussions.

In general I expect this type of novel to be somewhat unrealistic as it just wouldn’t be exciting if it were completely realistic, would it? With regard to the actual battle, which finally took place at the two-thirds mark in the book, it was exciting and moved quickly (even if the battle wasn’t told in chronological order for some strange reason). The other aspects of this novel, however, were difficult to swallow as they were beyond realistic. For example, an ethical debate on Voltaire while enjoying a glass of wine didn’t feel genuine. The sex scenes were clinical and devoid of any passion.

I also had issues with some of the ‘facts’ presented by Cook. In many Islamic countries, it isn’t unusual to see Muslims drinking alcohol in public (I live in one). There also seemed to be some confusion about the Arab World and Muslim World, which are definitely not the same thing. In fact the last Caliph of Islam was an Ottoman (who were most definitely not Arabs). Until Cooch reaches Iran, the fact that Iranians are Persians was conveniently forgotten (or at least not made obvious for the reader). Although the book is fictional, I was a bit put out by Cook’s assertion that Jordan was amongst those Arab countries trying to destroy Israel and the Jews.

Lots of bang, not much character.
By celticfrogreviews
Pulse
Robert Cook

Pulse, by Robert Cook pits Cooch, an Arab-American, and the rest of his team against the nation, or at least the leaders, of Iran in a scenario in which Iran has a nuclear warhead, but primed mostly as a EMP weapon to be used against Israel.

If you are willing to put up with the long setup, the war scenes at the end are well written and feel like a realistic playout of the forces involved. It was especially interesting to see weapons talked about recently in Scientific American appearing on the scene in the book.

Aside from that I struggled with the characterization. Everybody Cooch assembled was the best at whatever they did. Not one person in his circle was anything less than exceptional. Unfortunately it also made them unbelievable. They could set up the overthrow of a sovereign nation without breaking a sweat. Strengths are okay in their place, but it is weaknesses that make a character (or group of characters) interesting.

Alongside of that issue, the dialogue was unremittingly dense and intelligent, but it also said only what was on the surface. There weren’t any murky bits to create misunderstanding. Everyone (even the liberal types) said just what they thought, then just accepted the other person’s view and left it at that. It is the subtexts and murky sections that make dialogue evocative.

Not that Pulse is a bad book. If you like modern warfare books you will enjoy this one completely.

Sensory Evaluation of Food: Principles and Practices (Food Science Text Series), by Harry T. Lawless, Hildegarde Heymann

The ?eld of sensory science has grown exponentially since the publication of the p- vious version of this work. Fifteen years ago the journal Food Quality and Preference was fairly new. Now it holds an eminent position as a venue for research on sensory test methods (among many other topics). Hundreds of articles relevant to sensory testing have appeared in that and in other journals such as the Journal of Sensory Studies. Knowledge of the intricate cellular processes in chemoreception, as well as their genetic basis, has undergone nothing less than a revolution, culminating in the award of the Nobel Prize to Buck and Axel in 2004 for their discovery of the olfactory receptor gene super family. Advances in statistical methodology have accelerated as well. Sensometrics meetings are now vigorous and well-attended annual events. Ideas like Thurstonian modeling were not widely embraced 15 years ago, but now seem to be part of the everyday thought process of many sensory scientists. And yet, some things stay the same. Sensory testing will always involve human participants. Humans are tough measuring instruments to work with. They come with varying degrees of acumen, training, experiences, differing genetic equipment, sensory capabilities, and of course, different preferences. Human foibles and their associated error variance will continue to place a limitation on sensory tests and actionable results. Reducing, controlling, partitioning, and explaining error variance are all at the heart of good test methods and practices.

Review

From the reviews of the second edition:

“This volume is an academic text, bringing together theory, methodologies and analysis techniques of sensory evaluation and references to thousands of research articles on sensory science in a logical and practical manner. … its primary aim is as a textbook for university-level sensory science modules. … also serves as an over-arching technical manual and resource for practicing food and drink technologists and sensory scientists. … The book is essential reading for those in the sensory evaluation sphere and serves as an excellent and practical reference.” (Patricia Stefanowicz, Journal of Wine Research, Vol. 24 (1), 2013)

From the Back Cover

The field of sensory science has grown exponentially since the publication of the first edition of Sensory Evaluation of Food. Fifteen years ago, the journal Food Quality and Preference was fairly new. Now it holds an eminent position as a venue for research on sensory test methods (among many other topics).  Knowledge of the intricate cellular processes in chemoreception, as well as their genetic basis has undergone nothing less than a revolution, culminating in the award of the Nobel Prize to Buck and Axel in 2004 for their discovery of the olfactory receptor gene super family. Advances in statistical methodology have accelerated as well. Sensometrics meetings are now vigorous and well-attended annual events. And yet, some things stay the same. Sensory testing will always involve human participants. But humans are tough measuring instruments to work with. They come with varying degrees of acumen, training, experiences, differing genetic equipment, sensory capabilities, and of course, different preferences. Human foibles and their associated error variance will continue to place a limitation on sensory tests and actionable results.

Although methods continue to evolve, appreciation of the core principles of the field is the key to effective application of sensory test methods. This book has been expanded to reflect the advances in methodologies, theory, and analysis that have transpired in the last 15 years. The chapters are now divided into numbered subsections. This may be of assistance to educators who may wish to assign only certain critical sections to beginning students. In some of the opening sections instructors will find suggestions about which sections are key for fundamental understanding of that topic or method. In many chapters we have gone out on a limb and specified a “recommended procedure.” In cases where there are multiple options for procedure or analysis, we usually chose a simple solution over one that is more complex.

This text attempts to be comprehensive, yet understandable to all students at the university level. All the major sensory test methods are illustrated and discussed, including discrimination, descriptive, and affective tests. Some chapters are devoted to special topics, such as thresholds, time-intensity methods, similarity testing, color, texture, sensory quality control, qualitative research methods, consumer test methods and questionnaires, shelf life testing, an introduction to multivariate statistical techniques, and strategic sensory research. The statistical appendix provides basic instruction in the common statistical analyses for sensory evaluation with worked examples.

He spent five years in consumer testing in industry, and serves as a consultant to various food and consumer products companies on sensory test methods.

Hildegarde Heymann is Professor of Viticulture and Enology at the University of California at Davis where she teaches sensory evaluation of wine and sensometrics. She spent nearly 17 years at the University of Missouri as a professor of sensory science.

Required for class, also a great reference
By Simon D. Hucko
Ordered the book from Amazon and got it very quickly. It was required for the class I'm taking, but there's a wealth of information inside, and I'm definitely hanging on to it as a reference once the course is done.

Not only does it provide a practical and theoretical overview of sensory testing, but it contains all of the statistics necessary to evaluate your experiments. There are plenty of reference tables in the appendix, removing the need to do a lot of math in order to determine significance of results.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is in the sensory field

Interesting and well-written book matter
By BlackShoe
The book itself is a little dry, however, it conveys what you need to know in an understandable way. It provides examples of the statistics involved in sensory testing and many other examples of real-life situations. I did enjoy this book and it worked well with the class I took.

Celia Correas de Zapata, an internationally recognized expert in the field of Latin American fiction written by women, has collected stories by thirty-one authors from fourteen countries, translated into English by such renowned scholars and writers as Gregory Rabassa and Margaret Sayers Peden. Contributors include Dora Alonso, Rosario Ferré, Elena Poniatowska, Ana Lydia Vega, and Luisa Valenzuela. The resulting book is a literary tour de force, stories written by women in this hemisphere that speak to cultures throughout the world. In her Foreword, Isabel Allende states, “This anthology is so valuable; it lays open the emotions of writers who, in turn, speak for others still shrouded in silence.”

From Publishers Weekly
"Until very recently," novelist Allende writes in the foreword to this comprehensive collection, "Latin American literature was-with very few exceptions-a man's game." No more. Combining prominent names such as Luisa Valenzuela, Elena Poniatowska and Allende with others little known outside their home countries, this anthology shows off the wealth of fiction being written today by Latin American women. Editor Correas de Zapata, a San Jose State University professor of Hispanic literature, has chosen stories from around the continent and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean. Brazilian author Clarice Lispector's "Looking for Some Dignity" is a bracing tale of an elderly women's creeping senility and waning sense of self. A number of stories, such as "Sophie and the Angel," by Cuba's Dora Alonso, about an old widow visited by an angel playing an electric guitar, show that Latin American men don't hold the patent on magic realism. Others, such as "Cloud Cover Caribbean," by Ana Lydia Vega of Puerto Rico, are firmly in the realist tradition; in this case, a refugee boat heading toward Miami founders because of the mutual mistrust of the passengers. If there's a flaw, it's that the sheer number of authors-31 in all-coupled with the brevity of each selection make it difficult for individual voices to stand out. The editor clearly favors breadth over depth, showcasing as many writers as possible in this appealing smorgasbord.

From Library Journal
This thoughtful collection is another welcome addition to the small but growing body of literature by contemporary Latin American women writers in translation. (See, for instance, Landscapes of a New Land , LJ 12/89.) The anthology includes 32 short stories by 31 women from 14 countries. The writers are all well known in their own countries, but few--except Isabel Allende, who has also written the foreword--will be known to most readers in this country. The other writers, including Clarice Lispector, Carmen Naranjo, Luisa Valenzuela, Rima de Vallbona, and others, certainly deserve our recognition. Correas de Zapata's scholarly introduction sets the tone for the collection, which should be enjoyed by nonscholars as well.

From Booklist
Thirty-one authors representing 14 Latin American nations are showcased in this collection. Traditionally, Latin American culture has virtually ignored the contributions of the few women able to give voice to their imaginations. Fortunately, that mindset has begun to evolve, and record numbers of Latin American females have been entering the recognized literary ranks. The enormous popularity of magic realism has also provided an enthusiatic international audience for previously unrecognized regional writers. Although diverse in plots and themes, these stories are unified by the fact that they were all authored by female residents of male-dominated societies and are all grounded in various combinations of the realistic, the surrealistic, and the supernatural. First published and translated in 1990, the Modern Library stamp of approval guarantees renewed interest in this stellar anthology. Margaret Flanagan

Worthwhile for Its Range of Authors
By Reader in Tokyo
This book was published in 1990 and contained 32 pieces by 31 writers, from 13 nations and Puerto Rico. It gathered together many Latin American female writers, who didn't begin to receive due attention in earlier anthologies in English for the region until starting from the mid-1980s.

The oldest writers it contained were Bolivia's María Virginia Estenssoro (1902-70), Paraguay's Josefina Pla (1909-99), Chile's María Luisa Bombal (1910-80), Argentina's Luisa Mercedes Levinson (1910-87), Cuba's Dora Alonso (1910-2001), Venezuela's Antonia Palacios (1910-2001) and Mexico's Elena Garro (1916-98). Those born in the 1920s and 30s included Marta Traba, Clarice Lispector, Nélida Piñon, Carmen Naranjo, Rosario Castellanos and Elena Poniatowska. The youngest were those born in the 1940s: Isabel Allende, Liliana Heker, Rosario Ferré and Christina Peri Rossi. Writers such as Laura Esquivel, born later, and Gabriela Mistral and Carmen Lyra, born before 1900, weren't included. Brazil's Dinah Silveira de Queiroz and Lygia Fagundes Telles were other, more contemporary writers who weren't selected.

As far as could be judged, the pieces ranged from the 1930s to the 1980s, with the main focus on the last few decades. Argentina had the greatest number of selections, with Levinson, Orozco, Traba, Valenzuela, Kociancich, Heker and Glickman, followed by Mexico, with Garro, Dueñas, Castellanos, Dávila and Poniatowska. Although the collection aimed to highlight female writers in the region, it provided only brief biographies for the authors and almost no information on the dates of publication or sources for the stories it contained.

The stories were of many types. A number were good at conveying their female protagonists' shifting mental landscapes as they considered or struggled against their husband (Bombal, Castellanos), revenged themselves on man and fate (Levinson), fantasized about love (Guerra), relived moments of deepest intimacy with a former lover (Palacios), meditated on what it meant to have a child (Estenssoro), recalled a youthful obsession with the worlds of fragrances and shoes (Duenas), or faced old age and approaching death (Lispector).

Others contained a narrator but gave most attention to the surrounding characters. For example, a story by Llano about a family that found its dead relatives appearing on the other side of a mirror in their home. Or Glickman's story set in the past, describing relationships among her elderly Jewish relatives and friends, emigrants from persecution in Europe.

Most of the stories were set in the present, more or less. Others were set in the past: the story by Glickman, or a story by Kociancich, which took its inspiration from a well-known woodcut from the Renaissance picturing a knight, death and the devil. Another, by Pla, depicted the final moments of a former Spanish conquistador, dying in bed in the new land, old and isolated from those around him. One, by Yáñez Cossío, took place in the future. It had no main characters and seemed to be a parable about society as a whole, using mainly the subject of computers.

Some of the stories were written ostensibly from a man's point of view. Besides those by Kociancich and Pla just mentioned, one by de Vallbona showed a young man's horror at his mother's declaration of freedom from her marriage, hand in hand with his growing attraction. In a story by Araujo, a narrator from a privileged group of leftist students recounted a kidnapping they attempted that went wrong; this was one of the few stories from the region I've read that referred to the period of student unrest in the 1960s.

An unsubtle story by Piñon showed a male landowner's reverence for his prize cow, from her purchase to her giving birth, to her sickness and death. A parody by Poniatowska took the form of a letter written by a jealous man to a French film actress, denouncing her for her "infidelity" to him by falling in love on screen, and ending by asking for her autograph and revealing he was in jail for attacking her image in the theater. In a funny story by Vega, which began on a makeshift craft struggling toward the U.S., two Spanish-speaking refugees from Cuba and the Dominican Republic ganged up on a French-speaking Haitian, but to the North Americans on the ship that rescued them they all looked the same. The only person on the ship shown to be working was a Puerto Rican deep in the hold.

A handful of other stories were fragmented, rambling or tiresome, with a point I was unable to grasp.

Almost none of the stories, when they focused on women, showed them in control of their own lives or free of the limits placed on them by families, husbands or lovers. Very few stories focused on, say, love between equals or the love between mothers and children. In a rare work showing a couple on more or less equal terms (Naranjo), a man and woman fell into a relationship and each started taking on characteristics of the other: the man became pregnant, and the woman began growing a beard and speaking in a deep voice. The story by Allende was primarily about the violence that brought a man and a woman together and then drove them apart, in the form of a folktale or allegory, with characters larger than life. None of the stories contained anything so mundane as a woman at work in an office.

Many of the stories used magic realist devices like exaggeration and absurdity (Solari, Naranjo) or blended hallucination and reality (Guerra, Davila, Llano, Palacios, Ferré, Garro). In the work by Solari, students attacked and ate a sensitive poet-teacher who'd lost control of her class. In the piece by Davila, a man saw his double walking with a stranger, and his consciousness shifted gradually into that of the second man or something deeper, resembling the style of Cortàzar. The work by Ferré shifted between the points of view of a selfish mother-in-law, bookish daughter and omniscient narrator, jumped back and forth in time, and was circular in form, with the conclusion becoming the beginning. The story by Garro contained a woman who appeared to belong to both the modern day and the time of the Spanish Conquest, with a husband in the present and a wounded Indian lover in the past, and the two realities penetrating each other. Other than these last two relatively complex pieces, for the most part the stories avoided complicated shifts in point of view or time like those found in writers like Asturias, Carpentier, Lezama Lima, Rulfo, Donoso, Sarduy or Arenas. Nor were there metaphysically intricate constructions like those of Borges.

For me, a handful of stories were really outstanding all the way through: Levinson, say, or Poniatowska. Yet the editor took great care in selecting a range of authors, styles and subjects, and that range, rather than the power of any particular story, was what was enjoyed most. The writing, too, ran along a spectrum from the following, in one piece:

"During the following days both of them opened the floodgates of repressed love and, for the first time since their cruel fate was decided, opened themselves to receive the other's proximity."

To this in another work, by Levinson:

"The expression on her face was no different from that of a great many women one meets in towns or cities: a mask of melancholy or tedium, and behind the mask, nothing . . . . Stretched out on the hammock, fanning herself, her face impassive, it was only her body that moved, undulating over the netting, multiplying its flutterings like the thousands of brilliant underwater fish disputing among themselves in an unnatural environment, to no end; all a bit monstrous."

This, by Palacios:

"And Delia feels fulfilled, frightened with a fulfillment and abandon that leaves her she knows not where . . . .Delia forgets her name, her birthdate, her fingerprints, those shallow curving designs on her fingertips . . . And Delia is moving, moving with the earth alongside Joaquín with an inebriating and all-enveloping sensation and feels lifted and detached from this earth, projected to those infinite heights she may not reach; or maybe descending, slowly, to those depths beyond the subsoil, beyond the seas, beyond the bottoms of the seas . . . Delia loses her memory and all notion of time, hours or minutes, seconds or centuries. Delia forgets yesterday's memories and tomorrow's . . ."

And this, by Lispector:

"But it happens that the woman also thought: it was too late to have a destiny. She thought that any kind of switch with another human being would do her good. It was then that it occurred to her there was no one else with whom she could trade places . . . . Why hadn't the other old women advised her that this could happen until the end? . . . . Without even one sublime thought to serve as a rudder and ennoble her existence . . . . She concluded that she was going to die as secretly as she had lived. But she also knew that every death is secret . . . .

"It was then that Mrs. Jorge B. Xavier abruptly doubled over the sink as though she were going to vomit out her viscera and she interrupted her life with an explosive silence: there!--has!--to!--be!--a!--way!--out!"

Rich in Metaphor & Nuance, Probably best read in a class or readers' group
By Sherrie Miranda
This book was a real mixed bag. Although many of the Latina writers have published novels that are excellent, their short stories often left you wondering about their skills in this arena. Or maybe it is the reader who needs more skills or understanding of life in Latin America? I can't discount them for my possible lack.
There were a few very well-written stories that I enjoyed immensely. Then there were the horror stories you wish you hadn't read, like "Death And Transfiguration of A Teacher" in which the female students killed, cut up & ate their sensitive and poetic teacher! I get the allusion. As a teacher myself, I often referred to the fresh new teachers as being eaten alive by the students, but still, it was not the kind of story one wants to read before going to sleep.
Most of the stories were quite rewarding, though I would have preferred to have discussed each story in a classroom or group situation as I think I would have gotten more out of them.
Such seems to be the way of Latino authors, both male and female. They are so rich with metaphor and nuance that they are meant to be read in a group where they can be discussed.

The Heart-Led Leader: How Living and Leading from the Heart Will Change Your Organization and Your Life, by Tommy Spaulding

In his first book, It’s Not Just Who You Know (which rose to #2 on the New York Times bestseller list), world renowned leadership speaker and former CEO of Up with People Tommy Spaulding talked about the power of building genuine and lasting relationships both personally and professionally.  In his new book, The Heart-Led Leader, Spaulding turns his focus to ourselves – to who we are.  Authentic leaders, Spaulding says, live and lead from the heart.  The values and principles that guide our lives and shape our ability to lead others is far more important than our title, or our ability to crunch numbers, or the impressive degrees we display on our walls.

To effect true transformational change, heart-led leaders draw on the qualities of humility, vulnerability, transparency, empathy and love.  Illustrated with stories from his own life, and from some of the exceptional leaders he has met and worked with over the years, Spaulding unpacks what those qualities mean, talks about the 18-inch journey from the head to the heart – from our intellect to our emotions – and shows us how to incorporate them into our careers, into how we manage and lead others, and into how we live our lives.  It is a vision of leadership that has the power to transform everything we do, and the lives of everyone we touch.

Leading from the Heart
By Deron
I am a sucker for any book that deals with the topic of leadership. Mostly because I feel like I have a lot to learn about the subject. You see, I believe there are two types of leaders. Those that are born leaders and those that are pushed into leadership positions. I personally fall into the second category. I wasn’t born with unbelievable leadership potential. But I have been put into leadership positions for most of my adult life. So I have a lot of catching up to do and a lot to learn.

I picked up Tommy Spaulding’s book The Heart Led Leader because, as I stated earlier I’m a sucker for leadership books, and because I genuinely want to be a better leader. I want to lead those that are following me from the heart and be the most effective leader I can be. This book was just the thing I was looking for.

The writer begins by making an interesting suggestion. Tommy writes that “The journey to heart-led leadership covers only 18 inches but it lasts a lifetime.” (pg1) He states that the distance from each person’s head to their heart is roughly 18 inches. So, each chapter that follows the introduction, are 18 traits that a heart-led leader must have.

The 18 traits or characteristics that the writer identifies are as follows:
Love, Humility, Caring, Passion, Selflessness, Authenticity, Self-Awareness,
Faithfulness, Character, Vulnerability, Forgiveness, Purpose, Encouragement,
Empathy, Generosity, Honesty, Trust & Transparency.

None of this is rocket science. However, it is good to remind ourselves often if we want to be a better leader. On page 3, Tommy writes, “leaders and organizations that lead with their hearts are more successful and drive better results than those that don’t.”

One important truth that Tommy mentions often throughout the book is that leadership is about who you are and not what you are. We spend so much time and energy trying to get somewhere that we forget who we are in the process. Or we simply never stop to work on who we are in the first place. It’s always more important to focus on who we are then what we are. Titles and positions will come and go. Character doesn’t.

One of my favorite quotes from the book is found on page 187. Tommy writes, “But leadership is not about having the answers to everything. Real leadership comes from making mistakes, showing vulnerability by admitting your mistakes and then learning from them. You see, what most people want in a leader is someone they can relate to.” This is so true and powerful. Leaders must take time to get to know their followers. If the leader is not “real” with the people they are leading, pretty soon there will be no one to lead.

I highly recommend The Heart Led Leader to anyone that desires to grow as a leader. You owe it to yourself, and the people you lead, to be the very best leader you can be.

Exactly what I needed as a leader
By Ashley Courvelle
I am an entrepreneur that leads a team of people on a daily basis and one of the areas that I struggle in the most is leadership. I tend to constantly shift from high productive leadership to nothing from day to day. I knew that I had to be missing a critical step in my leadership, but I wasn't sure what that was until I read The Heart-Led Leader. This book teaches you to lead from your heart like Jesus did. I have been leaving love out of my leadership all along and that is where I was failing. This book shows you that when you lead from your heart and not just your head that is where the magic happens. In this book Tommy Spaulding talks about a different kind of leader, someone who does right even when no one is looking. A leader who has personal character and leaves heart prints on those he leads.

The book is divided into three parts. In Part one, he establishes that “Who you are” matters more than what you do. To be an effective Heart Led leader, you must focus on who you are. Part two – the 18 Inch Journey has 18 different stories that illustrate the power of leading from the heart. In Part three, Mr. Spaulding shares two heartfelt stories that leave a HeartPrint on the world.
I have taken so many key points from this book and can not wait to implement them with my team. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is a leader in any form.

Wonderful Stories that will Inspire and Motivate You to Become a Heart Led Leader
By John Chancellor
Our concept of leadership has been evolving over the past several years. At one time we viewed leadership as “command and control”. Most leaders understand that approach no longer works. More and more leaders are embracing the idea of servant leadership. Servant leadership requires that we lead with the heart, not just facts and figures, spreadsheets and metrics.

According to Tommy Spaulding, author of The Heart Led Leader, leading from the heart requires an 18” journey – moving the decision making process from the brain to the heart. By allowing our heart – our emotions to enter into the process, we will engage our followers on a deeper level, they will in turn reward the leader with outstanding results.

Mr. Spaulding captures so many moving, heart led stories. Some will bring tears to your eyes, some will inspire you and collectively you will come away convinced of the power of Heart Led leadership.

Mr. Spaulding writes in an easy, conversational style. Mr. Spaulding is a motivational speaker. He is also an excellent storyteller. The book is filled with real life stories that come to life in a powerful and moving way. There are stories that show exceptional character and courage – forgiveness and letting go. Some people lead with unbelievable heart.

Please do not think that because Mr. Spaulding advocates Heart Led Leadership that he is suggesting that leaders need not be disciplined and hold others accountable. His premise is that by leading from the heart, you should actually increase both sales and profits. An effective heart led leader is not necessarily touchy-feely and does not allow people to set their own rules. The heart led leader is empathic, loving and disciplined. He is transparent, vulnerable, compassionate and expect his employees to be the same.

A quick and easy read. Inspiring. Provides plenty of examples of the real benefits, both tangible and intangible of being a heart led leader.
