Most complete DJ instructional book I've read

I loved this book! There has never been a more complete book written on this subject i have read. It will teach you about gear, music, techniques, business advice, and the industry as a whole. If you have never touched DJ gear, you will learn everything you need to start doing gigs. If you have DJ'd for a while like I have, you will pick up great tips to rejuvenate your love of it. Really fun read!

Completely worth the money!

I started DJing in 2010. I literally saw a cool DJ video on YouTube and decided it would fun. The next day I found myself at a music store and after 3 hours purchased a controller (outside of my budget and not what I needed in the least). I had to figure out everything - where to get music; how to organize it; how to hook up everything; how to get gigs. There was so much trial and error. This book really compresses years worth of experience into an easy to digest format. I really wish this was available when I started.

NO hunger PAINs, NO weight re-GAIN

If you enjoy eating, don't like feeling hungry, and want to lose weight on a long term sustainable path, then I recommend reading this book.

Using the caloric density as a guideline as to how much of a given food you should eat is easy to follow. My willpower to avoid sweets has become almost heroic. Honestly, I am shocked how boxes of cookies and bags of chips go untouched by me now. They are just too calorically dense.

When I snack, and I snack all the time, I am eating fresh fruit or no-fat cottage cheese. I eat scrambled eggs with salsa for breakfast. Fruit through out the day and a big dinner with lots of veggies. In fact, after dinners I feel full.

I have yet to try the recipes in the book so I can't comment about them.

Losing weight following the volumetric principles has been easy and pleasant. Just remember: NO hunger PAINs, NO weight re-GAIN

Research-based, Realistic and Healthy Weight Management!

A book about healthy eating and weight control that really is based on sound research! What a treasure!

So often such books sound like they are based on science, but their "science" base does not truly represent what current evidence shows. Volumetrics, in contrast, is "the real deal". A large number of good quality studies shows that this approach based on calorie density of food really does help us create eating patterns that reduce calorie consumption without going hungry. On top of it all, it stands in contrast to the diets that promise weight loss -- with the goal of improving your health -- via unhealthy approaches to eating. Volumetrics allows you to learn new eating habits while you are losing weight that are habits you will want to continue for their good health value.

As a registered dietitian who specializes in strategies to reduce cancer risk while promoting overall health, the Volumetrics approach is what I talk about all the time. A healthy weight is among the steps to reduce cancer risk most strongly supported by research. The approach to eating outlined in this book shows how to get there using overall eating habits that also support lower cancer risk and better overall health.

I am so excited that the new book by Barbara Rolls is out. I have used her previous books and managed to get to my ideal weight and keep it off. I also read the recent article in Nutrition Action about this book so had to have it. The book is based on her research studies and includes new recipes with color photos that look amazing. It also has before and after pictures showing how you can adapt meals so you will feel fuller on fewer calories. A must have!

Chapters in this book draw on experience from a variety of geographical areas and different development projects and processes to analyse men and masculinities and to draw out implications for policy and practice. Subjects covered include working with children and in schools, impacting upon sexual health and intimate relations, and working with men in women‘s groups. Other chapters look at gender relations and masculinities in situations of violence and conflict, the role of the state and ideologies of nationalism in shaping masculinities, and the interlinking of gender relations with race and class. Overall they illustrate the complexity of economic and social relationships shaped by local, national and international processes, and the importance of incorporating an understanding of men and masculinities into gender and development.

too many cooks?

It's funny that the time has an exclamation point in it. Unlike the double meaning of Cornel West's title "Race Matters," there is nothing inventive in this. I'm surprised that academics would want to scream anything for a book like this.
The contributors mention that the idea of "women in development" (or WID) has changed to "gender and development" (or GAD), yet has not looked specifically at how masculinity issues affect men in developing countries. Further, it is honorably noted how women's issues won't be advanced without male participation. If men don't agree to use condoms, AIDS will still spread in southern Africa. If men don't learn to respect children, they will sire boys that will commit the same injustices they have, etc. This book definitely had impressive goals.
The book's contributors are equally male and female; also, it seems ethnically diverse. While the book has chapters involving Asia and Latin America, half the book focuses on sub-Saharan Africa. This is left unexamined. Is that where most development scholars work? Is that where funds tend to be directed? Is that where masculinity issues are the most glaring? It's surprising that the cover of the book shows a Latin American male worker and his sons when the majority of the subjects in the book are African males.
This book must be applauded for two reasons. First, I appreciated its mention of boys and the violence that grown men perpetrate against them. One chapter mentions that development agencies must do more to re-program child soldiers who have been abused by rebels and goverments in power. International child advocates may want to read this book for that reason.
Second, along with the aforementioned example of how dominant men do not just oppress women, but also other males, this book highlights the diversity of males in developing countries. Examples include older men vs. younger men in South Africa, classic bugarrones vs. modern pingueros in Cuba, or tribal differences in Namibia. Obviously, the scholars here borrow from feminists of color that say women are not a monolithic category and that race and class must be taken into account. These authors apply that claim to men. This book was gay-inclusive or at least tried not to be rigidly heterocentric.
Still, the chapters wondered on and on, with very little structure. The points that authors want to make to other development scholars usually had nothing to do with the actual groups or phenomena they later described. This book was totally disorganized and not much fun to read.
I applaud the contributors for trying to bring men's studies and development studies together. Still, this was quite a flawed production.
