Excellent Resource
By Bradley Feilmeier
As a molecular biologist in Animal Health research, I have found this book to be invaluable. In fact, I frequently reference this book over the Field's Virology volumes because of the complete and up-to-date information supplied. I would recommend this book to anyone in the molecular virology field (actually, my background is in molecular bacteriology and this book helped me easily transition to virology). Invaluable!

Wait and See: Finding Peace in God's Pauses and Plans, by Wendy Pope

Every woman struggles with times of waiting—for a spouse, a child, a job. In Wait and See, Wendy Pope guides readers to focus on the Person of their faith rather than the object of their wait. Pope draws on the story of King David, who was anointed king nearly twenty years before he took his throne.

This hands-on guidebook invites readers to record their own waiting discoveries. With practical suggestions and real-life stories, Pope shows readers how they can be active in the present as they hope for the future.

Reading the book gave me an inner peace knowing that prayers are not always answered immediately but finding peace in the Good L
By Burnetabarley
I was one of the lucky ones being asked to review this book .This book came at a time when many trials have been hitting our family. In fact, every time I turn around it is one more thing that makes me wonder what I did to deserve all of this. Many of the things we have been dealing with could result in death, divorce or dissension in the family. Reading the book gave me an inner peace knowing that prayers are not always answered immediately but finding peace in the Good Lord's pauses. Our timing is not always his timing . We need to focus on God's Love and trust in him to lead us to the answer to our prayers. Sometimes those answers are not always evident immediately but we must wait and see.

Worth the Wait
By Lorraine Swartzentruber
Wendy Pope knows a thing or two about waiting. She waited many years before conceiving a child. She waited countless months for a diagnosis as her husband's eyesight became blurry for no apparent reason. And she waited twelve years at her desk at Proverbs 31 Ministry before she was able to achieve her dream of publishing a book.
That book, called "Wait and See," is a well thought out examination of the waiting periods in our lives. Throughout the book, Pope compares the lives of 4 modern day "waiters" with that of King David to demonstrate how God uses stagnant seasons in our lives to do something good in us.
The ten chapters in the book deal with how waiting on the Lord changes us. At the end of each chapter, she reveals a little more about the lives of the "waiters" mentioned above, as they progress on their journeys. She also allows room for Bible study and personal reflection.
Pope, who calls herself a "word nerd," does not waste a word in her writing. Her analogies are appropriate, her examples realistic and her tone comes across down-to-earth without being falsely empathetic. She shares insightful Biblical truths like, "As we wait, we find peace in God's plans and hope in His pauses. Our focus moves from the object of our wait to the Person of our faith." I found myself feeling convicted of my own struggles with patience due to the honesty and vulnerability of her personal examples.
This book should appeal to anyone who has been through a period of waiting. It is a reminder that God is with us even in the times it seems he is silent.

*I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher in return for my honest opinion.*

Sometimes waiting is painful and we wonder where God is
By Jennifer
Wendy writes from personal experience the wait that we experience while God is working in our lives. Her writing is very transparent. This isn't a how to book, but a new way of thinking. Sometimes waiting is painful and we wonder where God is. Wendy talks about how she changed her way of thinking about the waits in her life. It is a great read for those of us in a waiting period and need to change how we process what goes on in the wait.

The new kid in school needs a new name! Or does she?

Being the new kid in school is hard enough, but what about when nobody can pronounce your name? Having just moved from Korea, Unhei is anxious that American kids will like her. So instead of introducing herself on the first day of school, she tells the class that she will choose a name by the following week. Her new classmates are fascinated by this no-name girl and decide to help out by filling a glass jar with names for her to pick from. But while Unhei practices being a Suzy, Laura, or Amanda, one of her classmates comes to her neighborhood and discovers her real name and its special meaning. On the day of her name choosing, the name jar has mysteriously disappeared. Encouraged by her new friends, Unhei chooses her own Korean name and helps everyone pronounce it—Yoon-Hey.

From School Library Journal
K-Gr 2-On the way to her first day of school, Unhei is teased by the children on the bus for her Korean name. When she reaches her classroom and is asked her name, she tells her classmates that she has not yet decided on one. To be helpful the children put their suggestions into a "name jar." Eventually the girl decides to keep her own name as one of her classmates takes pride in the new Korean nickname he has chosen, Chinku, meaning "friend." The round, red imprint of the Korean character for Unhei's name provides the graphic manifestation of the story's theme. Attractive golden endpapers feature random repetitions of the stamp imprint interspersed with her classmates' handwritten suggestions on scraps of torn paper. The bold, bright paintings that illustrate the story are realistic, warm, and appealing. Unfortunately, the text sags under the weight of its mission to describe how it might feel to immigrate. A well-meaning and visually attractive effort, but uninspired.

From Booklist
Ages 4-8. Unhei has just come with her family from Korea and is starting school. Her name is pronounced Yoon-hye, which means grace, but she feels awkward about it after some teasing on the school bus. She decides to choose an American name, and her classmates oblige her by filling a glass jar with their suggestions. Her mother reminds her that she and her grandmother went to a name master for Unhei's name, and Unhei practices stamping her name with the beautiful name stamp her grandmother gave her. Finally, Unhei decides to keep her own name, and one of her classmates even has a stamp made for himself with the Korean characters for friend. The paintings are mostly in gold and earth tones, and the figures have both stature and simplicity--as does the story. GraceAnne DeCandido

Wonderful!
By Lynn Ellingwood
I love this book because it reinforces the idea that people have a right to their given names and that they have a right to expect people to learn how to pronounce them. I work with many Chinese, Korean and Japanese students and it is common for these kids to feel the obligation to change their name, allow teachers and students mispronounce them if they do use their given names, and their parents often tell them to get used to it rather than teaching them to assert themselves and expect people to learn how to pronounce them. If the child feels that they have a right to their name, the keep it, teach people how to pronounce it and feel better about themselves. If they change it, the given name still pops up on paperwork, people still mispronounce it and they are always trying to hide it away before it pops up again. Accepting your name and teaching people how to pronounce it, provides people with empowerment and a sense of some control over their lives. It helps a lot in the acculturaltion process.

Good book for the classroom and home.
By Justin Samuels
Very good book. Name jar is about accepting one's culture background. Once Unhei accepted who she was, she was able to teach the class and the teacher about her Korean background. The books shows things from the viewpoint of a young girl who is a new American. I think this is not only a good book for kids at home to read, but a good book to assign for school children to read.

About the Author

Eriq Oliver Neale is the owner of EON Consulting (http://www.eonconsulting.net), a small business technology consulting practice in Denton, Texas, and a partner in Third Tier (http://www.thirdtier.net), an organization that provides escalation support for IT organizations around the globe. He is an internationally-recognized Small Business Server expert, and has been awarded the Most Valuable Professional designation for Small Business Server since 2005. Eriq was the lead author for Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 Unleashed, and his other writing credits include contributions to The Internet Unleashed 1997, Windows 2000 Server System Administrator’s Handbook, E-mail Virus Protection Handbook, and several books in both the 2000 and 2003 series MCSE exam preparation series.

Eriq is a 20+-year veteran in the IT industry, getting his start with DOS 2.1 and Novell 1.1. Over the course of his career, he has worked with various operating platforms (Microsoft, Apple, Novell, UNIX, Linux, VAX, AS/400), and he has focused on providing integration solutions for differing platforms. He has worked for small organizations, as well as Fortune 500 companies. Eriq’s introduction to the Small Business Server product line came in a one-year stint supporting the product for Microsoft Product Support and Services in Las Colinas, Texas. Since then, he has been focusing on providing solutions to make running and supporting SBS easier.

In addition to writing, Eriq maintains two blogs, one technical (http://simultaneouspancakes.com/Lessons) and one business-focused (http://msmvps.com/blogs/onq), and hosts a technology-focused weekly Internet radio program for small business owners (http://www.eoncall.com). He speaks regularly at industry conferences and user groups on a variety of SBS-related topics.

Eriq is a native Texan and makes his permanent residence in Denton. He is married, and he and his wife have a menagerie of animals for children. When not writing, blogging, or speaking about technology, he can be found attending baseball and women’s college basketball games, writing and recording music, or reading mysteries.

Amy Babinchak has officially been in IT since 1994 and unofficially for 10 years prior. Like many IT professionals, she started out helping people around the office and in the college dorm to build and use computers. Her knowledge grew from MS-DOS and the early PC applications into a full-time career, when she made the switch from professional environmentalist working from grant to grant into the world of enterprise IT support. In her career, she has supported MS-DOS, Windows 3.11, Novell, and Mac OS, all the way on up to the current versions. Having started her career in enterprise support, Amy noticed that many small businesses were languishing with poorly conceived networks and lack of consistent support. Excessive travel coerced her into opening her own business in 2000.

Amy is now the President of Harbor Computer Services (http://www.harborcomputerservices.net) to serve small businesses in the metro Detroit area and a Managing Partner in Third Tier (http://www.thirdtier.net), which provides escalation support services to IT organizations around the world. Harbor Computer Services has been recognized as a Small Business Specialist (SBSC). Amy actively participates in two local user groups and several online newsgroups. She has spoken at local and international conferences on SBS technical and security topics, including SMB Nation and SMB Summit. Amy is a Forefront MVP and has contributed her technical writing skills to Microsoft SBS 2003 Unleashed and various web sites. When these things don’t keep her busy enough, she provides remote support services for small business consultants using ISA. Amy firmly believes in maintaining work-life balance and has designed her company around this concept. She practices what she preaches by spending as much time as possible on her sailboat, cruising northern Lake Huron.

Timothy Truman Barrett is cleverly disguised as a mild-mannered geek. He actually is a happily married man with his lovely wife of 18 years, Dayna. They have two wonderful daughters, Stephanie and Lauren, who are also lovely. And Tim hates monkeys. A lot. Obsessed with building things from Lincoln Logs and Tinker Toys almost from birth, Tim finally got his first computer at age 15--an old used TRS-80 Model I. It had no instructions or manuals, but by trial and error, he figured out how to make it work. He also learned BASIC and spent the entire summer bugging his mother and six siblings by constantly showing them all the “cool” stuff he could do with it. After studying computer aided drafting (CAD) and physics at Louisville Technical Institute, he went to work in the healthcare industry and then moved into information technology. As a veritable jack-of-all-trades, Tim has worked with just about everything: sewing machines, table saws, X-ray machines, IBM mainframes, phone systems, servers, PCs, and the occasional backhoe.

At age 39, Tim is currently a Microsoft Certified Professional, a Microsoft Small Business Specialist, Microsoft SBS MVP, and the founder of the Kentucky Small Business Server User Group (KYSBSUG). His motto is, “No Geek Left Behind.” He also has strong religious values as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Introduction Introduction

Whether you have been working with the Small Business Server product line for years or are seeing an SBS server for the first time, you will find that Small Business Server 2008 is not like many other Microsoft products. Like its predecessors, SBS 2008 combines core Microsoft technologies such as Exchange, SharePoint, and IIS, all on the same box, but SBS 2008 goes beyond just providing the glue that allows those tools to interact seamlessly. And that is where the learning curve comes in.

This book has been written to help the reader shorten the learning curve for SBS 2008. Readers who have never touched a Small Business Server before may be mystified by all the wizards and consoles and tools that are not found on “standard” Microsoft server products. Readers who have a solid working knowledge of previous SBS versions will recognize many of the elements of previous versions in SBS 2008, but those elements have changed drastically in this edition. To that end, the contributors for this book have worked to present SBS 2008 in such a way that the qualified consultant can quickly learn about the product as he or she first starts to work with it, as well as using the book as a reference guide for ongoing support of SBS 2008 after initial installation.

Whether SBS 2008 will be a big seller when it hits the streets in Fall 2008 or not remains to be seen. Regardless of how many units Microsoft sells in the first six months of the product life, the author team believes that any consultant who plans to provide support for SBS 2008 should start becoming comfortable with the product sooner rather than later. To help make that goal a reality, the contributors have worked to bring this book to print as close to the release of the product as possible.

One element that is not included in this book is a discussion of the use of virtualization technology in and around an SBS 2008 installation. This was a conscious decision on the part of the development team for several reasons. Most importantly, the virtualization story provided by Microsoft was not announced until after the product was released to manufacturing, and the author team did not feel that there was enough time to fully develop content related to virtualization, given the very short amount of time between RTM and the release of the book. Rather than present an incomplete, or worse, incorrect, story related to virtualization, the team opted to wait for the best practices of virtualization to develop in the industry. That said, there will be content related to virtualization in and around SBS 2008 posted to the book’s web site as the process and understanding matures. Quite honestly, the story surrounding virtualization and SBS may not even be fully complete by the time this book hits the shelves.

With changes in the licensing model and enforcement, the inclusion of multiple server OS licenses in the Premium Edition, the ability to split the bundled SQL software on a separate server, and the updates to the core technologies, there is much to learn about SBS 2008. The contributors hope that the material you find in the remaining pages of this book will help you quickly improve your ability to support the SBS 2008 product and grow your practice at the same time.

Book Overview
  • Part 1, “Introduction and Setup,” details the history of the product and how to plan for and install an SBS 2008 server.
  • Part 2, “Managing Network and Web Configuration,” focuses on the networking technologies of SBS, including DHCP, DNS, IIS, remote access, and VPN, as well as discussing SharePoint and Companyweb.
  • Part 3, “Managing E-Mail,” focuses on the e-mail features of SBS at the client and server level and covers Exchange disaster recovery issues as well.
  • Part 4, “Managing Client Connectivity,” details the management of clients in the SBS network and covers incorporating Macintosh clients and setting up Terminal Services.
  • Part 5, “Managing Security and System Health,” takes an in-depth look at the maintenance side of SBS, including the monitoring and reporting tools, backups, group policy, and keeping systems up to date with security patches.
  • Part 6, “Beyond SBS 2008,” covers two of the newer technologies incorporated into SBS 2008, IPv6 and PowerShell, as well as covering advanced topics for setup.

Recommended, but not enough by itself
By Stephen
More than half finished with this book, I am writing a review from the perspective of an in-house person who manages IT as just one of my job duties in our small organization rather than from a consultant's point of view. The short of my opinion is this: 1) The value of this book will far exceed its costs if it saves you from making just one or two mistakes (and I think it will); 2) You will need more than this book to manage an SBS environment; 3) The target audience for this book remains ambiguous to me.

Depending on how extensively you use each component of SBS and what you already know, I recommend separate SharePoint, IIS, Exchange, and Active Directory books as well as one that covers Server 2008 in general in addition to this book. SBS Unleashed is far too short at 800 pages to cover these topics in enough detail for you to make full use of the product's capabilities.

Specifically, I would not feel comfortable managing an Exchange Server with only this book at hand. With three chapters (Management, Client Connectivity, Disaster Recovery), it is easily the most in-depth covered topic. That is appreciated; however, something as crucial and common as how to configure and manage email addresses that use both internal and external domains is only covered tangentially even though you will have both if you follow the instructions in the installation chapter. An Exchange Admin would likely find this trivial, but if this book was written for her, I am sure she would find an example of how to add an additional external email address (which IS included) even more trivial.

The SharePoint chapter also demonstrates additional books are in order. Seemingly randomly included is a step-by-step on how to setup a Wiki, but an explanation of exactly what can be done with SharePoint is missing. The take-away sounds like this: "SharePoint is a great document management and collaboration software package, here are the default settings, steps to merge existing data, how to back-up settings, and one page on troubleshooting." Disappointing. The same thing goes for Exchange Public Folders. You might learn how to back them up and a few (important) notes, but don't expect to be told how you can make use of them.

I would not have subtracted a star if it wasn't for two things: 1) Target audience, and 2) The chapter on IIS.

1) If this book is targeted at people who already understand the standalone products and are mainly interested in what is different in SBS, why would something such as a screen shot of where you enter your organization's address information be included? (I use that just as an example of the conflicting target audiences).

2) The chapter on IIS was extremely frustrating as it was not fully edited (wizard names confused, repetitive paragraphs, sentences that I don't think I should have had to read more than once or twice but did), it included a full page of a log file with no explanation, and it did a rough job of explaining certificates, which are better covered in a future chapter on Exchange Client Connectivity. It just seemed rushed and not thought out besides not doing you much good if you aren't already familiar managing IIS.

Despite my criticisms, this book is a must-buy if you are a consultant who has clients that might use SBS or if your organization is planning or considering implementing an SBS solution. The authors are really part of the SBS community and you can find some of them active on blogs and newsgroups (see the SBS newsgroups at Microsoft Connect). I do think they have taken a very complex product and presented a substantial amount of useful information in an engaging way that will help you manage SBS. I'm sure as more seasoned IT admins read the book, they will disagree with me.

Excellent Book, very helpful!
By JoeC
I just setup our new SBS 2008 domain and the process was very straightforward, thanks to this book. The information is laid out clearly, every step is detailed, tons of information and easy to follow even for someone who hasn't administered a network before. Definitely recommended!

Worthwhile book, but beware....
By WhittWicky
This SBS 2008 book is fairly complete with the exceptions noted by other reviewers, who I felt did an excellent job of reviewing the book. Rather than restate what has already been covered, I would like to warn others about the false claim in the back of the book for a "FREE Online Edition" at [...]

First of all, it is limited access -- it expires after 45 days. To me FREE means FREE. Not in the case of Safari Online - after 45 days they want you pay a second time to view the book you already purchased.

Second, you can't print anything, even during the 45 day period, unless, you guessed it, you pay them more $$$.

I never like false advertising and I feel the claim in the book is false and misleading. Shame on [...], shame on Safari Online, and shame on Eriq Oliver Neale, et al for letting them publish a book with false and misleading information.

I would have given the book 4 stars except for the Safari Online problem.

WARNINGS: This is Part One of a novella. Coming soon is part two, Breaking Elena: Twisted. This story contains strong language in the form of dirty talk and cursing. This story is meant for adults only. This story also contains elements of age play, virgin first time sex. This is not a typical feel good romance story. It is an erotic love story but that love story is horrifyingly twisted. Read at your own risk...

From the Author
Chapter One Excerpt of Breaking Elena: Obsession

From the Journal of B. Dimitriou:

I want her with a passion I haven't felt since Sophia. I feel like a boy again. I anticipate the hours of play I'll have with my new toy.

Purely by chance, I found her in a diner. A hole in the wall hardly worthy of my patronage but I found myself ensnared with her profile. I needed a second look. A longer look. A bell above the glass door rang harshly, discordant, as I entered the diner after her. Just another reason the diner is pedestrian and not worth my time. Nevertheless, my Moppet was in there and so I contained my disdain and walked inside.

She wore jeans and a red cotton tee with a V-neck that contrasted nicely with her black hair and pale skin. No coat on a cold winter day. I hated every shiver she suffered as she warmed inside the toasty diner. At least the establishment had done that right--many such businesses tried to save money on electricity by barely keeping the chill out of the air.

She ordered a greasy burger and french fries and washed it down with a sugary soda. I had a very difficult time controlling my immediate need to redden the pert cheeks of her ass for ordering such unhealthy food. I had a salad with grilled chicken and drank water. Bottled, of course.  It's what she should have had rather than that cholesterol laden pile of junk with no nutritional value.

I soothed my ire with promises that once I obtained her, I would not allow such disregard for her arteries. No more greasy burgers and fries for my Moppet. When she left the restaurant, I followed her to her job and then I followed her home.

She lived in a rundown neighborhood with good bones. It must have been quite nice at one point. Over the next month, I visited many times. I rifled through her mail. I breathed the scent of her panties. I read her diaries--and oh, how precious she is, my Moppet.

Her diaries revealed much more to me than even she might consciously comprehend. As a psychiatrist, I am trained to see what is beyond the outer shell into the mental chaos that is the human brain. It only took a small bit of investigation to confirm my theories. It thrilled me to realize how much she needed me but it also saddened me that I hadn't been there for her much sooner. Had I known of her need, I would have spared her the necessity and made the bitch Aunt disappear. Painfully.

She is, very simply put, perfect for me.

My Moppet--my new obsession. I can feel that I will grow to love her. Just reading the thoughts of her diary has parted curtains in my mind to let sunlight into the grim space my mind had become due to long and lonely years. My teeth clench at the thought of waiting to have her but I must plan. I must make room for her in my house.

I had believed that the part of me that was capable of love had died long ago, with Sophia. Before Sophia's death, she accused me of smothering her with my love. I suppose that was true, for in the end, my love did kill Sophia. I loved her to death.

Moppet would be different. I vowed it.

Engrossing; need the next book!!
By Paly
1. Too short, way too short for a book. I want to read books preferably not short stories. This is not even a short story as there is a cliffy. Damn the protagonists were just getting into it and it ENDED. I can't give 5*'s when other authors put so much more into their books. Sorry Regina, and I think your work is real good, having read some of your other stuff.

2. Needs a good Editor: errors and omissions, and in 65 pages there's plenty:

Not sure what this meant, and I Googled, even 'urban dictionary, to no avail:(view spoiler) Please let me know if you know what this refers to.

(view spoiler) Needs punctuation, and the error correcting. Little things? Yeah sure, but annoying, and certainly separates the great from the not-so-great. Miss Shiderly IMO, could be GREAT! Just needs a bit of help to get there; her work is washed, now it needs a good polish to shine.

(view spoiler) NO, NO, NO!! And the description goes on and on; all this in a 2 second augen blick?? Authors STOP doing this PLEASE, a whole page of this?? Too much detail; allow your readers to use their imaginations to build/create/imagine your characters how they want/need them to be. Stop forcing on me your idea of what physically turns me on or off. Example of good practice: Suzanne Steele's The Executioner. God what an Alp, right there on the front cover. Description overload? No, she barely mentions his physical attributes! SS is a master/mistress at allowing her readers to conjure up their own images of the physical presence of her characters; very clever.

Example of bad practice: EL James's physical description of Grey; his 'grey' eyes, and was it copper coloured hair he had?? Sorry not for me; give me those big black pupils or even aqua green would do, but GREY?? In fact give me NONE, let me imagine his eye/hair colour, height and other physical attributes. LOL, grey, blah.

(view spoiler) No please don't tell me that, please?? I really got mad here, and wanted to put the piece aside, but figured I could still conjure up something that would turn me on. I kept thinking about The Executioner, and continued.

Miss Shiderly surely is a wordsmith, and she used some great phrasing, which can be funny or poignant. I loved both her protagonists; particularly her Alp, he is super mesmerising; super in control; super tough and sexy. Will he maintain those qualities throughout subsequent parts? Dunno; again not fair to other authors who write whole books, and do just that with their Alps.

A taster of how good Miss Shiderly writes, and can capture the reader:

(view spoiler) And that's all the description I need.

The story's good so far (65 pages), and if on KU, I will read PT.2. Most of the writing is tight, and engaging. The characters 2 dimensional, and real. It's all there, just needs 'tweaking' some.
